The Library Fire: A Short Story

The Library Fire Joe and John had been friends since elementary, and were thrilled to learn they had been accepted into the same college. Secretly, Joe wondered how many Ivy League schools John had turned down to stay with his long-time friend. John was a prodigy, a genius. He always had straight A’s, and was the teacher’s pet in every class. John had dyed his hair two years ago in a bright crimson hue, and his eyes were green. A lot of Christmas jokes had been made, but John didn’t really care. Joe, however, was extremely plain, with brown hair and eyes. Few ever took care to remember him, simply due to his simple nature. He had had average grades throughout his school life, and had no defining features.
At the moment, Joe and John were studying for theoretical physics. John had picked the class in order to become a physicist, and Joe had

Are you sure you should be messing with it?” Joe’s voice betrayed his nervousness. Josie looked offended at the question.
“Moron, of COURSE it’s dangerous. Didn’t I just say it was a fire potion? But don’t worry, I’ve got it all under control!” At her words, she started flipping the bottle in her hand in a show of how “under control” she had it. Both boys nervously followed the bottle’s path.
Up. Down. Up. Down. Up. Down.
Down.
Down.
Josie had missed the last catch. The phial hit the library floor and shattered. The liquid immediately burst into flame, hungrily devouring the old wood of the library floor. The three college students looked in horror at the bright orange flames. John recovered first, and immediately started barking orders.
“We need some way to extinguish the fire! Joe, grab that fire extinguisher!”
Joe complied, and held the bright red cylinder nervously.
“Now empty it, and then fill it with water from the water fountain in the north-east corner!”
Joe looked at him in confusion.
“Why don't I just spray the white fluid in the fire extinguisher all over the

Where is the water?” the worker who was trying to get it to work yelled back “There’s no pressure, nothing coming” (122). The way that the doors were put on caused even more chaos. The most satisfying feeling in the world is when all of a sudden, everything clicks. It's the feeling when all the information just learned is suddenly arranged in that perfect way that makes understanding all the moving parts and how they fit together easy. What makes a book truly great is its ability to engage the reader in a way that allows them to finally see the point of the book. A World Lit Only by Fire by William Manchester, a lengthy summary of the medieval times and how they came to an end, does not deliver. The author makes several points in his “Author’s Note” about what the purpose of the book is, and in doing so, directs the reader in a certain direction regarding his theme and along the way, confuses the reader as well as never gets to his own points.…

Last October I participated in the Dartmouth Native Fly-In Program and while I was visiting I made a trip to the third floor of the Dartmouth library. I remember this experience quite well because out of all the wonderful memories I made on that trip, this was the one experience that had the greatest impact on me. I remember walking into the library where old, frail books lined the walls with dark, mahogany bookcases stretching high. There were antique lamps on the desks that let off just enough light for one person to study under and floors that creaked loud enough to draw attention to my friends and I. We finally reached the center of the library where I saw a bronze Native American sculpture that I recognized from a museum I have visited many times here in Oklahoma.…

In the historical narrative, Boys in the Boat, Daniel Brown recounts the captivating tale of Joe Rantz, his rowing crew mates, and their journey to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The majority of the book describes the many obstacles that the young men from Washington University had to overcome leading up to their Olympic victory. More importantly, Brown sheds light on some of the individuals’ personal backgrounds, whose lives were significantly affected by the Great Depression, ultimately shaping their character and enabling them to be successful rowers. Boys in the Boat illustrates how the mental strength required of these boys was a vital piece in the winning of the Berlin Olympics. More than any other story, it supports the notion that success does not come easy and is not just given away, but earned.…
