One might not believe that a group of people in the United States would be discriminated against however transgender people are discriminated against daily. These people struggle with issues most Americans do not even realize exist. For example, “My favorite school activity is leaving school, transgender teen Gavin Grimm says (Wolf). Transgender people have the right to access a comfortable safe place to use the restroom or to participate in other areas of society just like other Americans. Privacy and respect is important for all people. Transgender people participating in society based on their gender identity are resulting in issues and conflicts in businesses, schools, and certain organizations. However, many of the conflicts can be remedied with medication and surgery, updating identification forms, altering health insurance, and adding more gender-neutral or family restrooms.
The transgender population appears to be larger than expected. The new figures are double the previous estimate. Jan Hoffman, author of “Estimate of U.S. Transgender Population Doubles to 1.4 Million Adults,” states that 0.6 percent of the adult population is transgender. Surprisingly, children were not counted in this study but young adults were in the majority. (Hoffman) Another figure worth reviewing is the military services. Lolita C.
