Lesson Delivery: The Lesson Delivery component of the SIOP Model is included to remind teachers to stay on track. Even with a well-planned lesson there is no guarantee that the lesson will meet the objective the teacher set out to accomplish. Many factors could cause the lesson to derail resulting in either wasted time or not enough time to complete the task. Teachers must monitor the discussion, delivery, and distractions that could occur during instruction. Research states that allowing a lesson to go with the flow is not helpful for English learners. They need the consistency of lesson delivery in order to connect the dots in their learning. An appropriate pace for a lesson is critical for English learners. Teachers must use instructional time wisely. Granted, critics of the SIOP Model believe it fosters passive rather than active learning (Crawford and Reyes). …show more content…
The SIOP Model is advertised as a solution to the problem. There are other structured learning curriculums but marketing and branding of the SIOP Model has pushed it to the forefront of curricula selection by many districts. Generally speaking, it appears that the SIOP Model sends the basic message that when it comes to making decisions about instruction, the teachers’ professional judgement is not to be trusted. The SIOP Model tightly controls and monitors classroom instruction through rigid procedures, explicit objectives, and daily assessments (Crawford and Reyes). It is my opinion that the SIOP Model would be great for new teachers but could be cumbersome and insulting to mature teachers. Although many districts are receiving ruthless attacks on bilingual education, they should proceed with caution when prescribing that “all” teachers use the SIOP
