How Does Lennie Treat Disabled People

In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, something that is portrayed correctly is how badly they treated the mentally challenged or disabled people. George, Lennie’s brother, has been taking care of him over that past few years, since his Aunt Clara passed away. They worked in a small town called Weed, that was until Lennie had an outburst with a women; he had been accused of rape after just wanting to touch the red silk of her dress. After that they ran to the Sacramento river, then got new jobs just north of the river. Lennie has been treated like crap from everybody, including his own family, his whole life. An example of how Lennie was treated could be “‘Where we goin’, George?’ The little man jerked down the brim of his hat and scowled …show more content…
Oxnotes.com also states “Lennie's situation is different to most people during 1930s America because he wasn't placed in a mental illness institution and has someone who cares for him, both which were rare at the time. Some would some that Lennie was lucky to have George to look after him. George supports Lennie's ability to work and doesn't let the fact that Lennie has a mental disability to stop Lennie from getting a job. This can be seen in Of Mice and Men through the fact that George doesn't let the boss hear Lennie before he sees Lennie working, attempting to hide Lennie's disability to prevent the boss from discriminating against Lennie.” This can show the reader that George wanted to boss to see how well he can work, not his problems that affect him. His mental disabilities don’t affect his work and that all that matters to George. Also this could signify that Lennie was extremely lucky, and unlucky at the same time. He has been put into an environment where people can pick on him, and mess with him because of his disabilities; but if he was placed in an institution, he would have been put through back breaking labor that would have absolutely no positive

In the book Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie is a simple, loving person that has a hard time keeping himself out of harms way. Lennie has the mentality and personality of someone who is special needs, but the built and strength of a frightening killer. Lennie's mental disability is obvious and shows how little is known about mental disability and how people with mental disabilities are treated in the settings. Lennie’s strength in size and power with the simpleness of his mind make Lennie a ticking bomb. The littlest things could make Lennie snap at anytime, and since he doesn't know his true strength he becomes very dangerous and has the potential to kill people. For example when Lennie was petting Curley's wife's hair and she yelled at him to stop, he became frightened and “closed on her hair and hung on... Lennie's other hand closed over her mouth and…

George goes through times when he is on Lennie 's side and encourages him to fight back against those who mistreat him such as on page 50 when he encouraged Lennie to fight back against Curly and even offered to fight with him because he is so perturbed by the way Curly singles out Lennie and tries to start fights with him. George later turns back on his promise to defend and support Lennie and ends up killing him because he fears for the well being of himself and others and worries that Lennie will continue to kill people even though he doesn 't know he is doing it. John Steinbeck illustrates the struggle the mentally disabled face in their relationships through his classic novel Of Mice and Men, using Lennie and George to exemplify this point. The knowledge of how the disabled were treated in the past helps us in this day and age to be more sensitive and compassionate towards those who differ from us. He shows through Lennie that no matter how many obstacles you face, no matter your afflictions, with the care and compassion of others you can make it to an…
