Ichabod is described by Irving as tall, superstitious, and greedy, he is also in love with one of his students, Katrina(). The producers of the movie transform Ichabod into an eccentric, excitable, and scientific constable from New York that is in Sleepy Hollow to investigate a mysterious triple murder and along the way meets Katrina at a party(). Similarly, Katrina also experiences a change from Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and the movie. For example in the story Katrina is described as a flirt, who is uninterested in Ichabod, but in the movie she is a kind hearted person who falls for Ichabod(). The reason why Ichabod and Katrina were altered for the movie is because the movie is more focused on the horseman and the supernatural, as opposed to the stories focus on the relationship between Ichabod and Katrina. Another example of a movie where the producers changed the characters from what they were portrayed in the original story is “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter. For instance, in the movie “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” Ichabod Crane is not set on getting Katrina 's hand in marriage, even though she has a massive inheritance and he was staying in her house(). This is in contrast to Irving’s story, in which Ichabod would constantly visit Katrina 's farm in order to win her heart, as well as her fortune(). Another discrepancy between the plot of the movie and the plot of the book is in regards to the horseman and his origins. In the movie the horseman is controlled by whomever has his head, which was severed by his own sword, and Ichabod being a constable by profession, connects obscure clues to eventually send the horseman back to his grave, while simultaneously getting Katrina’s hand in marriage(). However, none of this happens in the book, the horseman was decapitated by a cannonball, and the only time that he is seen by Ichabod he is presumed to be dead, and the legend of the horseman lives on(). The producers of the movie decided to change the plot because making the horseman the focus of the movie it created a more suspenseful, mysterious, and frightening element to the story. The plot from the movie “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” also changed from its original state in the story. In the book Granny starts off with in her bed do to an unknown illness, which she dies from at the end of the story().
