Legalizing Marijuana Persuasive Essay

During the last several years, controversy has arisen all across the United States referring to the legalization of marijuana. Several states, including Colorado, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the District of Columbia have since approved the recreational use of marijuana. The controversy continues and many people who are for federal legalization lean toward the financial gain and the positive effects it will have on the economy because of taxation. However, the negative facets are virtually being ignored. Several reasons stand out as to why the legalization of marijuana should not be allowed throughout the United States. Despite the increased revenue for the states, there are negative effects to the health care system and to the individual states on the monetary level. Also, law enforcement agencies from bordering states have to deal with an influx of the drug coming across its state lines. By legalizing marijuana, people will have easy access to a drug that is well documented to cause negative health problems, considered a “gateway drug” to more potent drugs, and an increase in crime rates.

Both state’s Attorney Generals are trying to put a stop on Colorado’s law believing that it is unconstitutional and it violates the Controlled Substances Act. Furthermore, both believe that their taxpayers should not have to bear the cost of Colorado’s “unconstitutional law”. Colorado disputes the allegations and their general attorney expressed that it is not unconstitutional for recreational use of marijuana in their state. The landscape of some bordering states has changed dramatically because of the Colorado legalization. It is causing conflict between law enforcement agencies and even state legislatures.
