British Petroleum’s Roll in the Gulf Oil Spill
This paper will explain some of the effects of three legal issues and three ethical issues surrounding the London-based British Petroleum Company’s involvement in the explosion of the offshore oil rig Deepwater Horizon and the subsequent oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico. There are many legal issues surrounding this disaster, but the three this paper will focus on are the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, maritime laws, and criminal charges

The costs listed here do not even take into consideration the $20 billion that BP has set aside in a trust fund on the suggestion of the White House. (Johnson, 2010). BP agreed to set up a $20 billion trust fund in order to try to keep from facing lawsuits from gulf coast residents and businesses affected by the gulf oil spill. The fund is meant for people and businesses to recover from financial losses due to the oil spill. (Mallor, et al, 2010, pg 602). The special fund will be independently administered and headed by Kenneth Feinberg, who ran a similar fund for victim’s families of the 9/11 Twin Towers terrorist attacks. Anyone suffering from an economic loss due to the spill is able file a claim. (Tankersley, 2010). US Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli wrote in a letter September 17 to Mr. Feinberg:
Your recent public statements have acknowledged that the process is more complicated and time-intensive than you had anticipated. I would reiterate to you, however, that the efficiency of the GCCF’s review and payment process is not just a matter of fulfilling your own performance goals. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill has disrupted the lives of thousands upon thousands of individuals, often cutting off the income on which they depend. Many of these individuals and businesses simply do not have the resources to get
