Learning about the legal environment in the classroom setting can be very interesting and exciting, but seeing a court in action is an entirely new learning experience. During my time spent at the Superior Court of Tolland at Rockville, I had the opportunity to observe multiple components of various court cases. Three cases that specifically stuck out to me were a criminal arraignment, jury selection, and a landlord/tenant dispute. Each of these cases had different elements that allowed me to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the United States legal system. The first case I witnessed was a domestic violence arraignment. When I entered the courtroom, the previous case was just beginning to conclude. Unlike some television programs that depict major celebrations or periods of despair following a verdict/hearing, I found the process of going through cases to be fairly nondescript. Defendants were …show more content…
After my experience, I found that what we talk about in class seems to make more sense to me. My previously held speculation of television courtroom settings has been confirmed as a dramatized recreation, and I feel more comfortable now that I better understand how the legal system works. Another aspect of the experience I really enjoyed was being able to see components of law that we learned about in class within each case. Initially, I was not incredibly excited to dedicated a morning to observing court cases, but I ended up finding myself disappointed when the court adjourned for lunch. Now that I know what a typically courtroom setting really is like, I would not be surprised if I were to return to the courthouse, just to watch and continue to

Before we attend the trial, there was only one Trial/Jury case which was Ellis et al v. Duong et at. Firstly, we have noticed that plaintiff side and juries were in the right and the defendant side was in the left from the judge’s view. There were two lawyers located each side, a clerk, a judge, and seven juries. The atmosphere in the court was silent and everyone respected with the dignity towards the judge. Since the Ellis et al v. Duong et at case was an ongoing case and held for quite a bit long time, we tried to focus on focused on understanding the facts based on the lawyers and witness’ arguments.…

These men and women come from vastly different backgrounds but share two distinct characteristics they are highly educated and overworked. In Courtroom 302, there are several major issues that are addressed concerning the law and mental health issues. Several dysfunctions that can be seen are more so concerning the law in itself and that is that jails and prisons are simply being used to house offenders and not reform them, as was the original intent. Courtroom 302 also illustrates a court system that is broken, where judges, attorneys and officers are overworked and forced to simply process cases and do not have the time to work in the interest of finding or delivering justice.…

The Power of Guilty Verdicts There exists a world not too far from ours, a world where no one laughs, no one smiles, and no one has enjoyable thoughts. In this place there is nothing to be found other than a near endless maze with rows upon rows of cells lit by the only fluorescent light bulb which dangles ten feet high above your head, there is no natural sunlight to be perceived, the last glimpse of the warm life giving photons was left behind the moment one enters the large metallic doors of this sorrowed place. This is a place where the only thing to be seen are humans confined to a minuscule grey box barely large enough to live in and the only thing to be heard is the horrid, silent screams of the minds whom make this place home,…

Studying the law, on the outside, seems to be dry as dust. With the archaic wording of the law to the sheer volume of laws to keep track of, it’s easy to dismiss law as only being important to attorneys and those that work for them. Yet law isn’t a world of its own. It is our world. A key part to understanding our world is understanding our laws, as both shape the other.…

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…
