The legal age of an adult today is eighteen years old in all fifty states of America. The permissible age of becoming an adult was changed in 1971 due to the high demand needed for the armed forces. Once the legal age to join the armed forces was changed to eighteen years old, the rules began to spiral out of control and many laws. This would also include getting married, voting, purchasing property and even education decisions began to all change from twenty-one years old to eighteen-years-old. The government has inconsistent ideas on what an adult at eighteen years old can do. Example, the law recognizes that eighteen, nineteen and twenty-year-old adults are not responsible enough to purchase or consume alcohol until age 21 yet allow them

Unfortunately, teenagers under the age of eighteen who are now a legal adult have the option to drop out of high school. They lack the necessary thinking skills needed to make the right choice of staying in school. The government gives them the easy way out choice which in turn ruins many lives of a good future. With all the pressure they face in today’s society, this is an unfortunate outcome but too often happens. Parents should have the right to attest that their children’s choice to drop out of high school until they reach the age of twenty-one. So many unsuccessful people nowadays are due to teenagers making the bad choice to quit school before receiving the great education everyone deserves. If this law can change from eighteen to twenty-one, there would be many more successful people in today’s society rather than poor and even homeless. Many of the issues lie against the government allowing this to happen and not doing anything to prevent it. The fact is, eighteen-year-olds simply are not mature enough to make these bigger decisions that can affect their future in a bad
