Roosevelt Vs FDR Essay

Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt shared many of the same political ideas, although they came from different political parties. Both answered to the same Progressive calling, and used their time in office to expand both the power of the executive as well as the overall size of the Federal Government. It can be said that Teddy Roosevelt (TR) laid the groundwork for the advent of Progressive Politics, while FDR expanded these ideas. Franklin Roosevelt (FDR), admired his older cousin, and followed his path to the president fairly closely. FDR even wore the same wire framed glasses as TR. FDR’s administration was almost an extension of TR’s- he was able to put into effect the ideas that his elder cousin first brought to the table. Both Roosevelts had extremely different upbringings, although they came from the same family. This bill created a new independent agency of unelected administrators to the NIRA. The members were appointed by the President and subsequently confirmed by the Senate. These unelected members had the ability to impose and enforce a new plethora of government regulation on labor. The act also would use a government body to help address disputes between unions and members of the private sector. The Wagner Act outline what was to be considered “fair” and “unfair” business practices, while setting standards for hours and wages. FDR essentially extended congressional powers to an executive agency in order to protect the integrity of American democracy. This unconstitutional measure, is quite questionable, but again, looking back to TR’s record with collective bargaining and business, we can see that these progressive policies transcends these two
