Huey Pierce Long Research Paper

Huey Pierce Long Jr., also known as The Kingfish, was born in Winnfield, Louisiana on August 30, 1893 (Jeansonne 1). At the age of seventeen, Huey was a traveling salesman from, Louisiana, to Texas, to Tennessee (Simkin 1). At the age of twenty- one, Long went to get his college education from Tulane University Law School in New Orleans. In 1918, Huey started practicing his law career in Shreveport, Louisiana. He presented small plaintiffs against large businesses (Life & Times 3). Long made a name for himself by taking a case against the biggest business in town. Even though the fortune was nice as an attorney, politics was his true passion (Life & Times 3). For example, 1928, Louisiana only had 331 miles of paved roads (Simkin 2). Huey launched an infrastructure program aimed to build 3,000 miles of roads (Simkin 2). He was able to create many jobs for citizens during the Great Depression, which helped him gain support from the poorer society. Huey also established schools in walking distance of all of Louisiana’s caucasian children. This is one of the reasons why there are so many bridges and roads named after Huey Long. My first time hearing about Mr. Long was in my eighth grade Louisiana history class. As a class, we were talking about his a few of his laws. We also talked about his Share Our Wealth speech. I just remember going over his life timeline, and seeing, in forty- two years, Huey had done some much. The reason I chose Huey Pierce Long Jr. as the topic of my research project was because of his impact on Louisiana. After taking a liking to getting to know Mr. Long is the eighth grade while taking Louisiana History. His life is not just interesting, but Huey’s life was full of Louisiana
