Lincoln made a promise to "preserve, protect, and defend" which he ended up doing when he joined the Union Army to defeat the Confederate Army. Lincoln wanted unity in this country which he sought to do whatever had to be done in order to get the unity he believed in. Some might ask if getting through the Civil War made Lincoln one of the great presidents, the answer to that question is summed up perfectly by Jim Collins, "Abraham Lincoln (one of the few Level 5 presidents in United States history), who never let his ego get in the way of his primary ambition for the larger cause of an enduring great nation. Yet those who mistook Mr. Lincoln 's personal modesty, shy nature, and awkward manner as signs of weakness found themselves terribly mistaken, to the scale of 250,000 Confederate and 360,000 Union lives, including Lincoln 's own." What Collins is saying in the quote is that Lincoln is considered one of the greatest presidents in US history but not just because of the lives that were saved during the war, but because of the way he conducted himself. Prior to his death Lincoln delivered a speech on April 11th 1865 which he spoke about what he wanted for the nation, but little did he know the man who would kill him was in the audience that day. The most ominous thing about John Wilkes Booth being in the audience that day is what he said to the person he was with, "Now, by God, I 'll put him through. That is the last speech he will ever make." Three days later Lincoln was shot by the same man who was an actor in the play that night.
