Question Thinking Reflection

Improved Essays
Of the learning outcomes outlined in the syllabus for this class, I can honestly say that I have learned to respond to readings, to explore unfamiliar ideas, to question thinking different from my own, to reflect on personal experiences, and to develop sound arguments. The assignment that I feel led me to truly learning this outcome is the argumentative essay. This assignment taught me more about unfamiliar ideas or thinking differently from my own beyond writing; moreover, I believe that I can relate or better understand opposing viewpoints from my own on a daily basis. For instance, it is fairly easy for me to get “caught up in my own world.” I can watch certain channels on tv that show what I like, follow certain pages on Facebook that …show more content…
What I thought was going to be a failed assignment on Blackboard actually became an enlightening and eye-opening experience. While the two of them are so different from each other, and so different from me, we all seemed to work well together on a topic unfamiliar to us. I always took it as a joke when teachers said they wanted us to “expand our minds” or “question thinking different from my own.” However, for this particular assignment I genuinely feel that I experienced what my teachers have been trying to get me to since high school. Although, it is no surprise that I am actually making real progress in my writing and in my personal experiences now that I am in college. Though I felt that I actually had broadened my perspective, I was still uneasy about the final grade of the assignment. My professor had us get back into our groups on that Monday. She handed us back the stapled stack of papers with a 93 written on the front. It felt so assuring knowing that my stepping out of my comfort zone actually acquired me one of my highest grades earned over the course of the entire semester. I had my doubts, wondering if Emma and Ajai had led me astray from my normal routine and causing me to make a less than desirable grade on the assignment. Fortunately, that was not the …show more content…
I feel that I can write beyond my normal writing style, incorporating ideas different from mine. Writing has always come so naturally, and being challenged in my writing for once was a surprisingly advantageous change. I learned more about my writing by experiencing others’ and more about the world around me than just “my world” that I find myself so caught up in. I can only hope that when the opportunity arises again, I will make the decision for my self and choose topics that challenge my way of thinking and partners that will spark ideas that change or heighten my own

In comparing Pappas and Tolisano’s taxonomies, Tolisano’s reflection of taxonomies has more connection to me in terms of my learning process and self-development in this class. As we can see, the bottom of the pyramid (the foundation), the very base consists of a big block structure and it gets little as it reaches the top. Similarly, my learning process in this class started to have a big, scattered, overwhelming pieces of ideas, then as the class progress, those ideas became smaller yet unified. When this class started, I am at the “what did I do” scale. It is the bottom but the very foundation of all the scales.…

Also, in chapter two the reader learns that you have to read to believe and disagree argument’s claims as known as the believing and doubting game. An essay or project in which I am allowed to argue a particular perspective and required to support my viewpoint with evidence makes me tick intellectually. I am excited by these persuasive papers and debates, because my mind thinks logically. My strengths lie in math and science, topics in which logic is necessary and mandatory. Therefore, I admit that I struggle in English and history classes. However, the opportunity to use logical thinking and reasoning allows the greyness of these classes to become a little more black and white.…

The day we expected to get our assignments back, I felt calm and confident. When I received my paper and saw what my grade was and the comments my teachers made, my whole mood changed. The grade and the remarks were nothing of what I expected, and the grade was well below what I normally score. After this assignment I started to give up because I did not think I would ever do as good and that my writing, in fact, did not improve at all, but Mrs. Moore told me not give up and to keep trying. The talk we had made me realize that I need to learn from this experience and continue to work hard and do my absolute best.…

Hillocks offers many valid arguments in Chapter 7. He argues that "argument should be part of the educational program at early stages" (200). I agree with his statement because argumentative writing is not taught until middle and high school, and I feel that the younger students are when they learn the skills, the more opportunities they have for improvement.…

During ENG 1020, we completed many assignments focusing on the three main goals of this course, teach students about different styles of rhetorical situation, learn about the different genres of reading, research, and writing, and to teach students to develop analyses and arguments using research-based content, effective organizations, and appropriate expression and mechanics. Throughout this course, I have learned how to search and specifically find appropriate sources using the CRAAP test, identify proper characteristics of a rhetorical piece, and be able to reflect on my own writing by completing multiple drafts. These experiences allowed me to improve my persuasion techniques, my ability to find reliable information, and editing skills.…

    Rhetoric Argument

I first want to address the stress of my first attempt at writing for an audience who specializes in the art of writing and argumentation. With that being said, the three readings I am focusing on this week (McNabb, Brooke, and Fleming) did precise job of explaining what exactly the art of rhetoric entails and the nature of Rhetoric and Composition as a field of study. I was fascinated with Fleming’s explanation of argument and the origins and models for arguing. I am of the general public who think that one “has” an argument rather than one “makes” an argument. In this way, I have always placed a negative connotation on arguing, but to think of the journal articles I will eventually write as a form of argumentation, or as an attempt to move…

Journal #5 What are the two most interesting or important aspects of argumentative writing that you learned about through the assigned reading in The Curious Writer? The two most interesting concepts that caught my attention during this reading assignment were the Credibility, Emotion, and Logic section on page 241 and the Common Logical Fallacies section on page 244-246. Why do you find these the most interesting or important? I thought the Credibility, Emotion and Logic section was interesting mainly for the fact that you should use certain type of appeals to persuade certain types of audiences.…

Arguing and debating is an important part of the human existence. Yet few people find themselves able to properly argue and win. One man, Jay Heinrichs, uses his knowledge in rhetoric, the art of arguing and persuasion, to write Thank You for Arguing. Heinrichs splits his book into four parts, offense, defense, advanced offence, and advanced defense. The first part, “Offense,” lays out the basics of arguing, starting with “Set Your Goals” so that you know what to argue about and how to go about arguing.…

Jamie – 582 WORDS Composition has changed my thinking in more ways than one. Writing is no longer a burden, but an opportunity to expand my thinking. Although I am not great at writing and I have more to learn, I now enjoy exploring ideas and putting pen to paper. Argumentative papers provide individuals with the opportunity to discuss a topic from different viewpoints. And in a sturdy argumentative paper an individual needs to claim a position that they can support and is a position where a student can discuss both the opposing and supporting views (Skwire, Wiener 323). This I learned is crucial to have when writing argumentative papers and is a skill that I am anxious, yet interested to do. Since discussing a topic with others can further my knowledge on the topic and can aid me in revising my perspective. However, I am anxious to present an arguable topic since I am at risk of being proven wrong.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…
