When she started school, the school placed her in an ESOL class for about three months. Throughout this time, Mrs. Vega received one on one instruction to intensely prepare her with phonemic awareness, English, grammar, and how to be fluent in reading. Prior to moving from one country to the next, Mrs. Vega’s parents moved from Puerto Rico for better job opportunity. Even though her parents were successful in their hometown, they wanted Mrs. Vega and her siblings to come to United States. In addition, her parents thought it was important for her to learn English and also be fluent in Spanish. Mrs. Vega remembers her first day walking to class. Everyone around her was speaking English and she felt very isolated and confused by her surroundings. She told me, “I was looking deeply in my hard drive brain to understand conversations and use words correctly.” She was deeply afraid that she would say something wrong. When Mrs. Vega thought she knew what a word meant, it had a different meaning and she did not understand why her way was incorrect. Learner Engagement enhances students’ ability to learn.
