Introduction As the teacher in a preschool classroom of four year olds, I have been faced with the challenge of designing a learning environment that supports the needs of diverse learners. One particular student named Lucy has been demonstrating a negative approach to school and learning as she states she hates school and would rather be at home with her mother. Lucy has been hitting other children during outdoor play times and putting classroom toys into her backpack to take home. Lucy’s parents speak Mandarin Chinese and limited English. The language barrier presents a challenge; however, I am determined to develop a strong partnership that supports the needs of both Lucy and her family members. This brief composition will examine my plan …show more content…
). One of the most critical strategies in this Lucy’s case is to get to know her and her family on a deeper level. Educators must invest time into learning all student’s individual cultural identities to create an environment that fosters learning and motivates students to learn. It is important that I demonstrate a high level of respect and genuine interest and care for Lucy and her family members. Kostelnik, Whiren, Soderman, and Rupiper (2015) notes “teachers who respect children as competent and creative learners create a classroom in which teachers and students thrive” (p. 137). It is critical that I observe and document Lucy’s behavior and interactions within our learning community. I will use assessment data to consider all factors of why Lucy may be having a difficult time adjusting to her school experience. I will research Mandarin Chinese culture to learn about their cultural beliefs, values, traditions, social and political relationships, and their world views. I will then plan a home visit (with a translator) to learn how Lucy and her family interact with one another in their home. The home visit provide an opportunity to efficiently communicate with Lucy’s family, and it will also give Lucy and me an opportunity to establish a …show more content…
Conducting home visits and helps me to learn about student’s interest and how they learn. According to Kostelnik, Soderman, Whiren, and Rupiper (2015) “knowing children, understanding their needs, and determining how to best guide their social, emotional, and cognitive development-these are the responsibilities of all teachers but especially of early childhood educators” (p. 189). To be an efficient educator, I know and understand the critical need for involving families and their communities in every aspect of their children’s learning experiences. My responsibility as an advocate for young children and their families requires me to get out into the community and find resources that will support all learners and their families to ensure their academic and overall

After reading the required resource for this week’s discussion board I choose Family Engagement in Anywhere, Anytime Learning. When it comes to family engagement in anywhere, anytime learning it is very important for families to engage early in the child’s learning. “Families living in neighborhoods with low-performing schools, crime, and poverty often have diminished access to high-quality early childhood and afterschool programs, summer learning experiences, and cultural institutions” (Lopez & Caspe, 2014, p. 1). “Families can uncover and nurture children’s and youth’s growing interests and match children’s strengths with various opportunities” (Lopez & Caspe, 2014, p. 3). It is important to have families involved because they can help…

My cooperating teacher, Mrs. Fusco, maintains a really positive environment. She keeps such a positive environment because of the various routines and procedures she uses in her classroom management. During the beginning of every class, including homeroom, the students have a set routine that they come in and attend to. In homeroom, students come in and sign up for what they are having for lunch, and turn in important documents as they wait for the morning announcements. Also, if they have brought a lunch they put their lunch box in a basket that gets collected by other students and brought to the lunch room to keep cold.…

In my short few months that I have been going there helping out and learning, I have noticed some very big problems. A few of these problems are, preparedness of the students and teachers, the classes never end on time, sometimes the kids are too loud, and everything feels really rushed. Most of these problems stem from a lack of organization within the group and can easily be fixed. I believe these organizational problems can be easily fixed if a few of my solutions, or similar solutions are effectively implemented.…

Education isn’t a seven-hour obligatory engagement conducted by a teacher in a classroom setting at the neighborhood school. Education is an on-going process involving members of the community, school district and family focused on providing engaging and accurate information to an eager and studious lifelong learner, no matter the grade level or discipline. Education doesn’t start and stop when the bell rings to start and end the school day. Education begins at home before a child is born and doesn’t stop, ever. The first educators in a child’s life are their parents.…

Blue is the highest level which means they were outstanding and went above and beyond. Green is you were doing what you were supposed to and had a good day. Orange is below that and is the “make better choices” level.…
