Educators must invest time into learning all student’s individual cultural identities to create an environment that fosters learning and motivates students to learn. It is important that I demonstrate a high level of respect and genuine interest and care for Lucy and her family members. Kostelnik, Whiren, Soderman, and Rupiper (2015) notes “teachers who respect children as competent and creative learners create a classroom in which teachers and students thrive” (p. 137). It is critical that I observe and document Lucy’s behavior and interactions within our learning community. I will use assessment data to consider all factors of why Lucy may be having a difficult time adjusting to her school experience. I will research Mandarin Chinese culture to learn about their cultural beliefs, values, traditions, social and political relationships, and their world views. I will then plan a home visit (with a translator) to learn how Lucy and her family interact with one another in their home.
