If you’re getting walled into a cellar I feel bad for you son, but I got 99 problems but Amontillado ain 't one. Whether locked in a closed room in underground catacombs or in a burning house, it is an unfortunate event that many people are fortunate to not have experienced. Even so, in Cask Of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe and The Leap by Louise Erdrich, both events happen. These stories, in addition to having exciting and overall interesting plots, have many great examples of literary elements such as foreshadowing and dramatic irony that make them even more interesting. The short story The Leap by Louise Erdrich has many interesting uses of literary elements and elements of writer’s craft. A very important literary element used in the short story is mood. The story develops the tone of the story and sets a bizarre and dangerous feel all around throughout the story. Mood is shown in a large way when the funeral of the people who died at the circus was being discussed. It is very sad, and the reader can easily feel it. The tone is especially prominent in the second half of the story when the family’s house is burning down. The mood is set in a very specific way to put the reader on edge, and it greatly enhances the story. Another important literary element is foreshadowing. The story discusses how weather works in the town, and how a storm could appear behind the mountain and nobody would know. This foreshadowed the storm that ruined the circus and killed multiple people. These, paired with the author’s craft elements make the story a lot more fun to read, and overall enhance the story. Images are shown especially well when the storm hit the circus. When the lightning strikes the tent, it is easy to imagine all of the streaks of light and …show more content…

In Cask Of Amontillado, there were more elements used than in The Leap. One element used in Cask Of Amontillado that was not utilized as well, if at all, in the other story is dramatic irony. In the first, there was lots of dramatic irony that you could feel through the whole story, whereas in The Leap, there was none noticeable at all. As stated earlier, the dramatic irony in Cask Of Amontillado was very prominent because it is the main element used in the story, and it is developed from the beginning. In the very beginning, Montresor established that he wanted to get revenge, which sets up the dramatic irony in the story. In The Leap, there are not any large instances when dramatic irony was noticed. Similarly, a strong craft element used in Cask that was not used in The Leap is details. In Cask, the detail of what Fortunato did to deserve the revenge that Montresor gave is not said, leaving the reader to wonder what happened that would warrant such behavior. In The Leap, most of the details of what happened in the life of the narrator and his mother are present, leaving no room for guesses of what happened. Some elements that were present in both stories but were utilized better in Cask include images and foreshadowing. The images in Cask were very
