Lincoln On Leadership examines the various leadership styles of Abraham Lincoln, along with who was as a person, and what made him a successful president during his reign. Throughout the book, Phillips also highlights how Lincoln’s leadership styles can be effective in the world today. The book is split up into four different sections; people, character, endeavor, and communication. Within these four sections, the reader is informed about leadership qualities and moments in his life that influenced Lincoln’s choices. The main character in the Lincoln on Leadership was Abraham Lincoln. In the book, the reader learns about those who influenced Lincoln’s intentions, those who were apart of his cabinet, the military generals, and many others. The reader learns about the struggles Lincoln faced throughout his presidency and how he used positive skills to overcome the obstacles and why he is viewed as the “essence of leadership,” (Phillips, 1992).

Lincoln believed that silence is key in communication and active listening is just as important as the act of communicating. To influence his people or to get a vital point across, Lincoln would try and make his speech relatable, whether that was through having a relaxed conversation or telling a story. It brought great joy to Lincoln to converse with people and for that, he was a great leader (Phillips, 1992).
