The Huston (2010) article depicted eight leadership competencies in her key note address that is extremely crucial for what lies ahead for the future of nursing. However, I find her speech quite impressive because this helps me to grasp many concepts of what is required to be a great nurse leader and to embrace myself for other new challenges. As an experienced critical care nurse, I found that all competencies are vital to me and the organization, clients, and staff and family members. Nurse management skills does not happen overnight because great managers must have the ability to communicate effectively, listen attentively, assist with the collaboration of the disciplinary team, and exhibits self-confidence. He or she must be experienced, knowledgeable and educationally advanced to stay abreast with today’s rapidly changing health care systems. The staff is inclined to be more attuned to how best that Nurse Manager negotiates and skilled at solving problems. In the article (Houston, 2010), I chose to use the fourth leadership competency in on the “Development of organizational cultures which emphasized quality patient care and worker and patient safety.” This leadership nurse competency is quite active in the hospital that I work because the organization had transformed from paper charting to sophisticated technology such as the implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). In our monthly magazine, the Chief Executive Officer bragged about the hospital’s substantial steady decline in medical errors.
