Transforming Leadership in Nursing
In broad social and political terms, transformation means basic alterations in entire systems (Burns, 2003). Burns described the transformational leadership style as a process by which leaders raise the aspirations and motivations of others to higher levels by appealing to higher ideals and values (Brady Schwartz, Spencer, Wilson and Wood, 2011). By pursuing transformational change, people can transform themselves Burns (2003). Success in nursing is often correlated with a leaders ability to inspire and empower others to reach their full potential. (Marquis & Huston, 2015) suggest that traditionally, nurses have been over-managed and inadequately led, and that contemporary health-care organizations need increasingly adaptive and flexible leadership. Transformational leadership is very helpful and powerful in nursing today. Although, applicable in different terms transformational leadership will be discussed in regards to intrinsic value in nursing, application to nursing, and value in the future of nursing.
Intrinsic Value in Nursing
Intrinsic motivation comes from within a person; driving him or her to be productive it can be and often is impacted by others Marquis & Huston (2015). In nursing the personal value in which a nurse feels to empower others can have a significant affect on patient outcomes. A patient who feels empowered about their healthcare through their nurse may feel inspired to lead a healthier life style.…
