The Importance Of Personality And Self Assessment In Health Care

As healthcare reform continues to run a fast pace of change and uncertainty throughout the industry, health care administrators are evolving and adapting to new standards to successfully lead their organizations. Ledlow & Coppola (2011), advocate that personality and self assessment has become a piece of the overall picture. Not only are we aware of our own personality archetype, but also gaining some experience with personality assessment before any real-world screening process to reduce apprehension and anxiety during the actual corporate setting (p.28). After completing the Leadership Legacy Assessment I found that I scored the highest as an Advocate; 24/25. I find this result to be a current strength. I’m very relentless when completing goals and tasks, I articulate important health information with patients on a daily basis. Being persuasive, would also describe one of my roles at work. For example, providing education and encouraging healthy habits such as diet and exercise for a patient who has hyperlipidemia or a pregnant patient who has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This is not a good quality for someone who desires to become a leader. This demonstrates that I would have poor management skills; allowing my team to perform whatever they wish. This result ultimately leads the team to suffer from a series of power struggles. I have a difficult time with delegating and following up. This has always been a weakness. In the event I find something that needs to be handled, I often get stressed because I feel uncomfortable telling someone else they have made a mistake.
