The Leadership Challenges Of Odysseus

Improved Essays
The Odyssey is an epic poem written by Homer and centers around Odysseus and his adventures on his way home from the trojan war. During these adventures, Odysseus leads his men to different islands and through various obstacles. Many people often question Odysseus' leadership. Should Odysseus receive a nomination for a leadership award? I on the other hand believe that Odysseus should not receive a leadership award. Odysseus lacks some qualities of a great leader such as communication, being selfless, and good decision making. Odysseus' communication skills towards his men throughout the odyssey is not the best, and that's not good considering that Odysseus is the leader. I read an article about "Top 10 Qualities …show more content…
Odysseus' selfishness costed him the lives of many of his men while in the cave with the cyclops. As a leader Odysseus should put his needs and what he feels last and everyone one of his men first. While on the island with the cyclops, Odysseus' men suggested to him that they steal the food and cattle and get away from the island. Odysseus refused his men's suggestion and ended up losing many of them all because he did what he felt was right and necessary. In Nicolas Cole's article, "The Brutal Truth Why Being a Leader Is So Hard", he touches upon why being a leader isn't as easy as it sounds. In paragraphs 13 and 14 he states that, "As a leader it's up to you to put yourself second, and operate in a way that allows others to feel at ease, to feel understood, and to work in the way that's best for them—even if it's not the way you operate". Cole is saying that as a leader you have to put yourself last and work in a way that's comfortable for everyone else. Odysseus needs to not only work in a way that's good for him, but also good for his men too. Odysseus' judgement in this situation proves that he doesn't show all the qualities of a great …show more content…
Odysseus showed this trait when he and his men were trying to escape from the cyclops. That is true however, Odysseus is bad when it comes to making decisions. Odysseus made a bad decision when going into the cyclops cave instead of taking the food and leaving the island, he also made a bad decision when Circe put Odysseus' men into a trance. Odysseus could have just begged Circe to let his men go home but, Odysseus being Odysseus waited a whole year until he finally begs her to let his men go home. That was bad decision making on Odysseus' part. In conclusion, Odysseus should not be nominated for a leadership award because he lacks some of the qualities of a great leader such as communication, being selfless, and making decisions. Odysseus isn't the best when it comes to communication and making decisions, which both affects not only him, but his team too. Odysseus does what he feels is right and ignores what his men have to say in tough situations. Do you want to nominate a leader who lacks the proper communication skills, is selfish and bad at making decisions? Most people wouldn't and so should you

In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates bravery as a trait of exceptional leadership when he fearlessly rescues his crewman from Circe’s potion. Despite seeing the “blinding tears” and “dry lips” of one of his crewmen, Eurylokhos, after returning for Circe’s hall, Odysseus decides to visit anyway and rescue his crewman from the unknown. When Eurylokhos arrives in a frantic state near the ship where Odysseus awaits the return of his men; Odysseus remains calm after he discovers his men are in danger, he “ [sees] nothing for it but to go” and rushes to the rescue (Homer 173, line 300-301). He “ [takes] the inland path alone” to arrive at Circe’s hall in the most effective amount of time where his men are held captive by…

Odysseus was the leader of his men on the ship returning home. During their encounter with Polyphemus, he warned the crew to not steal and directed some to stay off shore. On the Isle of the Sun, he tried to stay awake after warning his crew members to not slaughter the cows, to keep an eye on them, and even prayed for their safety. He was not a perfect leader, however. Sometimes, he would keep secrets or misinform his crew, resulting in catastrophe.…

In the Odyssey, Odysseus shows good leadership throughout his twenty year journey back to Ithaca. There is evidence and details to support why Odysseus shows good leadership in the Odyssey. To prove that Odysseus is a good leader, he shows intelligence which is part of what the Greeks valued. Odysseus is strong willed and he puts his life at risk when trying to save his men from all the dangers throughout the journey. One of Odysseus main characteristic that really stands out to me is his courage. He displayed courage when he passes through the sirens island and he only has two paths to take, one path is past a man eating monster named Scylla with six heads and the second path was by Charybdis which is basically a big whirlpool, an Odysseus chose the…

In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is an outstanding leader with many beneficial traits that he uses to his advantage. Having a very persuasive and smart mind helped Odysseus on his track home. For example, when he and his men were trapped in the cave with a cyclops. He used his mind skills and outsmarted the cyclops to escape from the cave. Also, he was able to persuade his crew to follow his orders, even though he may not make right choices.…

In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus is finally released from Calypso after seven years. Odysseus proceeded to lead his men on his way back home to be reunited with his wife, Penelope. Today, Homer is globally seen as a great leader for his men, but his clear demonstration of pride, daringness, and his pettiness made him a horrible leader. One of the biggest weaknesses for leaders is having too much pride, and Odysseus has more than enough of that, as shown in the Cyclops. Odysseus’ crew was caught by a Cyclops, but when he got away he decided to insult the Cyclops (The Cyclops. 476).…

In the comedy epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a good leader because his arrogance causes his crew members to pass away and the lack of trust from his crew makes him unable to control them. Odysseus’s arrogance leads to the death of his crew. For example, while Odysseus and his crew are approaching Scylla, Odysseus knows that six of the crew members paddling will die. However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…

It is not the capacity of holding power but the capacity to hold a relationship. Additionally, that relationship requires mutual trust, loyalty and respect in order for any member to feel comfortable and important. Odysseus has the defining character traits of a Homeric leader: strength, courage, nobility, a thirst for glory, and confidence in his authority. He is admired by Eumaeus because of these attributes and continues to be Odysseus’ supporter off of the strength of that authority. Eumaeus states, “...it is for the lost Odysseus that my heart aches and yearns.…

In the epic poem, the Odyssey, written by Homer, it tells of the amazing feats performed by Odysseus. He goes on impossible adventures for the average man; He successfully leads his crew through the sea, or does he? Even though Odysseus may show that he is clever, he also shows that he does not listen, is very temperamental, and is untrustworthy; Because of these character traits, he cannot be an effective leader. To begin, Odysseus shows multiple times that he does not listen to his crew. His crew tries to warn him of the multiple dangers that were to come from his actions, yet he refuses to listen, putting several of his crew’s lives in danger, and even killing a few of them.…

One would think that good leaders would not try to demoralize their crew, even if the circumstances are not going in their favor. Likewise, Odysseus is showing the lack of his leadership by not making the logical decision by not listening to the song of the Seirenes. He again is lacking in Homer’s expectation of Arete by not showing excellence or being a good leader, which should be the goal in one’s life. On the outside, Odysseus is perceived as a good leader and person, but once one starts peeling the layers back of his personality his true colors start to show. He also puts an unnecessary burden on the shoulders of his men and himself that would have been avoided if not for Odysseus’s narcissistic morals.…
