The Leadership Challenge Analysis

Through reading “The Leadership Challenge” by James Kouzes and Barry Posner, I believe it has given me many new perspectives and approaches to leadership along with heightening my knowledge on what I already know. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to give a clear summary of what I have learned and what stood out the most to me from the book “The Leadership Challenge”. I will begin my summary discussing five concepts from the book that I found to be important. Secondly through my discussion on the five concepts, I will examine how each one relates to one another and how they will direct me going forward in my process of developing a leadership style. I will conclude the paper by discussing my thoughts on the book as a whole, and how other …show more content…
I went with this concept not only because it is a good one, but I believe that if you want to become great at something, no matter what it is, you can’t be afraid to approach big moments when they arise. One thing that stood out to me from “The Leadership Challenge” is the first sentence in this section of the book, which says “when people recall their personal-best leadership experiences, they always think about some kind of challenge” (Pg. 159). I know from personal experience that these are the moments that make us better no matter what the outcome because it is about gaining that experience and knowledge from each situation. The book has taught me that these moments are important, but they aren’t always easy, and the reason so is because they will involve change. Change is not something that we try to resist for the fear of not knowing, but I understand now that a good leader must be able to adapt and that change can be a big factor in in finding …show more content…
This second concept involves setting the example and as discussed earlier when you lack passion it shows, but when you have passion your feelings come to the surface and your actions speak for themselves, and this can be contagious. But if I can’t lead through my actions and setting the example how can I expect to strengthen others. I am a big believer that you have to be willing to work and better yourself before you can actually help others. If you possess these three concepts it will help with how you “envision your future”, without them the future isn’t as important because you have no passion, motivation and could care less for what you are doing. Lastly, I find that all four of these concepts can lead me to gaining the mentality and ability to “seize the initiative”. Through your passion, motivation, vision and ability to lead, you will possess the confidence along with what it takes to approach any situation without

Sergeant Louis, Renzo E. Leadership Challenge: Can You Conquer It? 1. As an NCO, what specifically will you do to influence your peers and junior Marines to reverse this trend? Personally, I will focus on a couple of my main leadership principals, “set the example” and “know yourself and seek self-improvement”. The reasons behind why I like those specific leadership principals is because in my opinion the need to set the example first before we expect anything from the other Marines, and if we are not setting the example for whatever reason, we need to be able identify the problem, find a solution and ask for help if needed, like in any other mission.…

Leadership is both a science and an art. Good leadership requires an accurate sense of self, a well-communicated vision, the ability to earn the trust of others and the capability to take effective action. In order to “build your house of leadership” your actions must inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more. (Duren, Lec. 2). Throughout the semester, I have learned that some of the five Kouzes and Posner leadership practices in The Leadership Challenge come naturally to me while others do not.…
