Reflection Of My Co-Worker

Improved Essays
In completing the leadership assessment, I asked a current co-worker that I have worked with for over fifteen years. At our previous company I was her manager and now we are co-workers. I trusted her to be completing honest in her assessment, as she understands that by being honest she is helping me to become a better leader. I also asked a previous co-worker who I later became good friends with after we no longer worked together. I was disappointed that he gave me a score of 10 in every category, as I explained to him that I needed him to be very honest and really reflective. I also asked them both to give me examples of when they have seen me represent the leadership characteristics on the assessment. The actual statements were the most valuable to me, as they made me realize some things about my leadership that I had not recognized fully before. …show more content…
As a leader I have done some things that really show my commitment to the growth of people as well as my commitment to building a community. I do agree that one of my strengths is the ability to persuade others, being aware of my weaknesses and strengths and the foresight to see future outcomes. As my co-worker pointed out in my assessment to me, I often will say things to my team about how if we do or don’t do something the outcome will be good or bad. I also think that I have the quality of stewardship. My team is the most important thing to me, and I make sure that they have the tools and the support to do their jobs and learn how to become better leaders themselves. In looking at my strengths, I would define myself as 80% transformational leadership style and 20% transactional leadership

    1. After reflecting on who or what event provided me with leadership influence I concluded there wasn’t one person or one event that has had the most effect on me to strive to become a better leader or person for that matter. I attempt to take pieces from each of their leadership qualities, use things I liked and stayed away from their “bad” leadership qualities I did not believe helped me grow as a leader or produce quality jobs or mission results. All the while, my own personality and beliefs intertwined with their leadership styles to make me who I am today as a leader.…

Throughout this semester, the most useful lesson I learned was from doing this self-assessment, which assisted in having a clearer understanding of who I am and who I will become. More importantly, they allowed me to better understand my own strengths and weaknesses, and how to better develop them. Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…
