As human beings, the author says we are like other creatures on earth that are governed by the laws of gravity, or certain biological laws that govern things on this earth; we have no choice but to obey. There is, though, one law that we can choose to obey or not. It is a law that we call the law of human decent behavior. It doesn't matter what part of the world we live in, Dr. Lewis says, people differ little when it comes to right and wrong as related to the law of human decent behavior. Unlike the law of nature that governs objects or non-human matter, it does not say what men do; it says, in fact, what men ought to do. Human beings realize or have some sense of that, he explains, and that they cannot have any real safety and happiness except in a society where everyone plays fair. It is because of this that they try to behave decently. Therefore, he concludes that the law of human nature is genuine — not simply something we made up.
1.4 What Lies Behind the Law
The author here says that the law of human nature must be: (1) something above and beyond the actual facts of human behavior, (2) something that cannot be discovered by science, and (3), something more like a mind than anything else we know. Nevertheless, it is conscious, has purpose, and prefers one thing to another. The author says some people attempt to explain the forces at work as something we can switch on and off, and does not put any demands on us — like reaping all the benefits and thrills of religion at none of the cost.
