The Lasting Effects of Friendships Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is a novel about the effects of a restrictive and overly stern government and how friendships form because of the isolation they put on their citizens. Bradbury explicitly applies friendships to show how people endure with the forced isolation from the government. The novel focuses on the main character Guy Montag and the supporting character Clarisse McClellan and how they form a friendship which ultimately lead Guy to revolt against the regime. Leslie-Baker Phelps would agree that “friendships in the present influence the nature of your friendships in the future.” When people who are close to you share interests such as emotions, it creates a bond of trust. For example, your peers can affect what kind of clothes you wear, your political opinions and even your emotions. Furthermore, how your friends think and react to you will have a heavy outcome on your perceptions of yourself. It is extremely important and imperative to control a healthy friendship, because a detrimental one could severely impact your life in a destructive manner (Phelps). Guy maintains an exceptional friendship with the ones he truly believes can help not only make his life better, but help society as a whole. This is established throughout the novel, and they only meet once. Clarisse leaves such a lasting impact on Guy and makes him questions himself, which is how she is a figure of insurgency. According to the article “Peer Pressure: Its Influence On Teens and Decision Making” “While it can be hard for people to resist peer influence sometimes, especially in the heat of the moment, it can also have a positive effect.” Even though people make poor decisions based on others, they may also make positive choices. Peer influence may lead people to start new activities and try new things. The article also states that “We are constantly influenced by those around us.” Once we see our friends doing a new activity and find it exciting, some might want to try these things because friends influence our opinions. However, peer influence can be difficult to oppose, especially in indiscreet or hazardous situations, and this is seen in Guy (Peer Pressure).
