The scene was set in Holcomb, Kansas, an extremely small town. Herb Clutter was the wealthy owner of River Valley Farm, husband to Bonnie Clutter, and father of three daughters and one son. Dick arrived to pickup Perry and the pair drove off; while in the car, Dick tells Perry about the lie he told his parents so that he can stay out overnight. It is revealed that Dick’s parents don’t like Perry because Dick befriended him in jail. Dick and Perry arrived in Emporia, Kansas where they purchased necessary items for their plans for the evening while Kenyon Clutter completed his chores for the weekend. Residents of Holcomb became suspicious because most people believed the killer was among them. Six hundred people attended the Clutter funeral. To obtain money for their trip to Mexico, Dick and Perry bought items at various stores with bad checks, and then pawned everything. Alvin Dewey, a KBI investigator, was constantly being called with tips; most of which were false. On Saturday November 21, Dick and Perry left Kansas, and the following Monday Beverly Clutter, one of Herb and Bonnie’s surviving daughters, got married since all of her family was already in town. Gossip about the murders continued to occupy Holcomb’s residents, and two Holcomb families moved away. Dick and Perry made it to Mexico, and in Acapulco, they befriended a wealthy German man. While Perry began packing up to leave Mexico, he read an old letter from his father which reveals his terrible childhood and a letter from his sister which showed their strained relationship. Alvin Dewey was revealed to be extremely worn out and sickly looking. He visited the Clutter house, as he did frequently. Meanwhile, Dick and Perry hitchhiked and waited for a solitary person to offer them a ride so that they could rob them and then kill
