As the story goes, Jesus warns his apostles that one of them will soon betray him. Philip, sitting to the right, questions Jesus, inquiring as to if it will be him. Jesus replies by saying, “He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me” (Matthew 26:23). This is experienced in the painting as Philip has his head tilted and palms pointed towards himself (Harris and Zucker).
