In the article “The Last Meow” published in The New Yorker in 2003 the author Burkhard Bilger states, “Americans now spend $19 billion a year on veterinary care for their pets, up from $11 billion just seven years ago. Add to that the cost of pet food and other supplies, and the number rises to $47 billion, nearly three times as much as the federal government spends on welfare grants.” Bilger claims, “clearly our love affair with animals has gotten out of control ( Part 8 para 49)”. There is no doubt that Americans spend a ridiculous amount of money on their beloved pets; money that could be spent improving their quality of their own life and the life of others. She has a number of things wrong with her. She is forced into having this operation with his wife because she cannot have children. Lady might want to go on to the next level in her life cycle. The Leverings have already spent $400 to have her teeth pulled and now they’re gonna spend 15k on an operation that will need to be paid off in the future because of them being in debt. Not to mention that Lady will need medicine that costs $500 a year to prevent infections, cancers, and diabetes. Mr. Levering makes $27,000 a year. That can put towards something that is really worth the money. If the operation were not to be done, then that’d be approximately a total of $42,000. That can be used to purchase a new cat. All pets learn to be loyal to their masters, even the new ones. They need to learn to let go of this cat or else they’ll be homeless. Most shelters have cats that want the love and care that the Leverings can give them. But, they’ll be put down if the population of stray cats keeps increasing. These cats can be saved by the Leverings or any other person.
I strongly disagree with the surgery and hope that people will look at the bigger picture. Yes, this is their beloved cat, but there are thousands more out there that actually want a home and receive love. Lady is already toothless, anemic, blind and really old. The surgery has been done and was successful, but Lady is still suffering.
