The Last Lecture By Randy Pausch: An Analysis

Improved Essays
There’s nothing high school students hate more than having to do school work over the summer. My classmates and I never had to do much. That is, until the summer before ninth grade. Upon receiving the list of potential literary works, students often based their selections on two criteria: which novel is the shortest and which one can be explained by his/her parents who’ve already read it. Assignments were distributed before the end of the prior academic year, and were to be completed based on their selection, in addition to the required novel. I remember being unfamiliar with nearly every novel on the list, so I chose one and skipped straight to the required novel, The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. My initial thoughts were of genuine disappointment;

    It was the year of 2014 going into 2015 and I was an eighth grader. This was my second year attending Bennett Academy charter school. My English language arts teacher, Ms. Walton, had told to my classmates and me that in mid-November we will begin to start our huge assignment. That assignment was to be completed before the graduation date of May 21st, 2015. Ms. Walton told us that we need to have at least fifty pages and no less.…

    Every year at Laurel Christian School, we are given a Summer Reading Assignment. The summer assignment consist of several rules, such as reading an assigned book given by your instructor, and keeping a journal of your reading in a standard size spiral bound notebook. In this case the notebook plays a very important role. For each chapter summary, you are required to title the page, give a plot summary, and write a personal analysis of the chapter. It may sound boring or lame but it is very helpful in several ways, simply because over the summer, students are too busy traveling, sleeping late, and having great time and afterwards forgetting everything about education.…

    In her 1999 essay, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, Francine Prose examines what she believes is the detrimental relationship between novels written by writers of different ethnic groups and identities and high school students. By employing rhetorical devices such as ethos, rhetorical questions, and cause and effect, Prose can emphasize how new curriculums in high school English courses including novels by culturally diverse writers are causing students to show less interest in reading. Prose begins her essay with an anecdote where she relates herself to other parents of high school students by saying she finds herself each September “increasingly appalled by the dismal lists of texts that [her] sons are doomed to waste a school year reading.” Providing this anecdotal evidence…

    I first picked up Highly Illogical Behavior at the recommendation of Mrs. Bock. I had never read a book with a protagonist who had a mental illness that was present in the behavior and the overall plot proceedings throughout the novel. I usually tend to stay within the genres that I am familiar with - romance and realistic fiction. Most of the books that I read are about how a man and a woman fall in love in spite of emotional and physical strife. Highly Illogical Behavior, however, was about a man who had such severe social anxiety that he developed agoraphobia, thus rendering him incapable of leaving his house.…

    My mind tends not to linger on literature for a long period of time. But, throughout this semester of Writing in Culture, Fremont High School written by Jonathan Kozol, did exactly that, linger. For some reason I wish I could say that this story relates to me, because of some personal experience that I had going through high school. In reality, my high school was great, I believe that is why this essay lingered in my head.…

    However, for the other three books that the students have to read, they should be a personal choice. Nothing is more uninteresting than a book that you do not connect with, so by giving the freedom to choose your own book to read, not off of a list, you can have your own amazing experience with a book that interests you. That being said, I did find a…

    America, the land known for its freedom and its classical novels. As years have come and gone, bestsellers and classics are being taken away from students in the school systems, the students have no say in the matter. Parents or the school board bring up the matter to the schools, then there are many meetings deciding whether the book should be banned or should stay. Challenging and banning books is a very popular matter now, with many eager to support, and some trying to get rid of the cause. Many parents and students question as to why books can be banned in the first place and what causes them to be taken out of so many schools.…

    Why Everyone In An American Classroom Should Read the Great Gatsby A extremely common question from high school students is “why should we spend our time reading old books and plays from a stupid list; especially, when there are more important things are going on in life and school? The reason why specific books are included on reading list is simple. Generally literature includes aspects that helps individuals increase their understanding of written works and why they’re important; but to be included on a reading list, a novel must specific meet specific criteria to prove its worthiness. While there is a gamut of criteria used to judge whether a novel belongs on a list or not, I believe the four following criteria are extremely critical…

    Books are a principle staple mark in a child's social and academic development. They furnish the foundation for an adolescent's inspiration and curiosity to be constructed. In America's modern day curriculum though, countless immature students are being forced to read a series of novels that promote profane and violent content, one being the popularized Fahrenheit 451. Positioned in the 24th century, Fahrenheit 451 apprises the reader about the principal protagonist, Guy Montag. Early within the novel, Montag gains gratification in his profession as a fireman, burning illegally possessed books and homes of their owners.…

    My main concern previous to this summer assignment was the level of interest I would have in the novels we read, as well as the difficulty they may contain. However, after reading, I thoroughly enjoyed the short stories and I genuinely believe that the reading level will be sufficiently difficult, yet not impossible. The amount of reading required for the summer assignment felt fairly familiar to the previous year. Nevertheless, I never had to write 5 papers in one summer. This doesn’t raise any concerns for me, however, because I did realize that AP Junior English would require more work, and I prepared myself for it.…

    “Of all passages, coming of age, or reaching adolescence is the purest, in that it is the loneliest. In birth one is not truly conscious; in marriage one has a partner, even death is faced with a life’s experience by one’s side,” said David Van Biema in. Throughout these “coming of age” years, young people are trying to adapt to the world around them while struggling to fit in. Young adult literature often helps students to understand and cope with social issues, pressures, and other problems relevant to their age group. Additionally, these books create an “escape” from reality for the reader.…

    There were no reading logs and no reflection projects. The only expectation was that the students would read the occasional assigned book, such as Romeo and Juliet or The Odyssey. However, these books were assigned intermittently enough to make the frustration I suffered from their restriction negligible. This newfound freedom led me to discover my new favorite genres of writing, which were, and still are, science fiction and dystopian novels. My initial experience with science fiction was H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.…
