The Mad King of Africa The Last King of Scotland was directed by Kevin MacDonald, screenplay by Peter Morgan and Jeremy Brock. I saw the movie on a Sunday morning the day after July 4th. In the early 70’s Nicholas Garrigan, a young Scottish doctor, arrives in Uganda to help out in a rural hospital. Once he is settled there he meets Idi Amin the new president of Uganda, who took power by a military coup. Garrigan becomes Amin’s personal physician, later he starts noticing the corruption that is taking place with the government. Admin becomes less stable mentally and goes on a killing-spree of anyone that opposed his government. Garrigan wanting out from his services decides to leave but he is denied his request to leave. I do think the director wanted the audience to learn about the history of Uganda and the vicious, corrupt government that has controlled for decades. This is a system of government that has taken over Uganda and many of its neighboring countries in Africa. Military governments are a reason Uganda has not been a prosperous country because of all the corruption and genocides. Idi Amin was a military leader that through a coup took control of Uganda and instead of bettering the country’s condition he brought the country to turmoil. In the film he begins killing anyone that he suspects of being against him including his closes advisors and his wives. He brings the country to panic by the mass murders that take place every day, he loses the trust and respect of all the people that once believed he would bring good to Uganda. There is a scene in where Amin hears of his advisor meeting at a bar with a white guy and he finds that suspicious. The advisor goes missing a couple of days later, but what the advisor was really doing was working out an agreement to bring penicillin to the country to help out the sick. This showed how mad and paranoid Amin was by killing a person that was actually trying to do
