The Last Child Essay

Last Child Technology does many wonders, stemming from pacemakers inserted into the hearts of patients, to the cell phones which most people own. However, technology has many downfalls, as explicated within the story, technology has taken away the basis of face-to-face communications, and it takes away interaction from people. While many people believe that technology is specifically a good thing, many others believe it is a downfall to society. The author makes the statement that children don’t attempt to peer outside of their car windows when they are driving anymore, children are more focused on watching movies, or playing games on their phones. A major argument for the creating of more desirable technology for children, is to keep them busy and quiet during road trips. However, a reason against more technology, is that people are losing more and more personal contact with others. Lastly, the author makes the astonishing observation, that children lose their sense of wonder and imagination of the outside world, because of technology. People have lost contact with nature because of technology, and it is becoming a hot button topic for three major reasons.

Children, in the “olden days,” had a sense of wonder from inside a car looking out upon the world which was speeding quickly by. The land itself, was a child’s big screen movie, and it was all that was needed to intrigue a child for many miles, but that screen has been replaced by the hand-held screens which cost more than money.
