Why Do People Learn Multiple Languages?

Improved Essays
Polyglots are people who speak multiple languages. Some polyglots know four or five languages. In exceptional cases, the individual may speak up to 20 different languages. While this language aptitude seems impossibly challenging, it is possible for average people to learn multiple languages. With the right techniques and a decent amount of dedication, language learners can quickly master their next language.

Start With Motivation

Learning a language takes hundreds or thousands of hours. To do all of this work, individuals have to find the right motivation. While some people just want to communicate with a variety of people, other individuals want to study ancient texts. Whatever the reason, language learners should start the process by

English uses a number of root words in these languages, and the alphabets are quite similar. If you can avoid it, try to save languages like Chinese or Russian until later. Chinese uses a character system for each word, and the tonal nature of the language is completely different than English. While many people learn Chinese as a second language, your experience will be easier if you start with a simpler language.

Consider Esperanto

In studies of Esperanto and Latin, high school students were better able to learn Esperanto. The study further divided students into two groups. The first group learned Esperanto for one year before studying Latin for the remaining three years. In comparison, the second group only focused on Latin for four years. The Esperanto group ultimately had a better command of Latin, an easier time learning and an understanding of Esperanto.

Esperanto is a unique language because it was entirely made up. The grammar rules follow a straightforward pattern. Unlike English, there are no irregular verbs to memorize. Because of this, Esperanto is one of the easiest languages to learn. Once you have mastered Esperanto, your mind is better able to learn another language. While you do not have to start with Esperanto to be a polyglot, it will make the learning process much

Learning a language is not something that you do for 30 minutes each day. Instead, it becomes a part of you. Whenever possible, try to surround yourself with newspapers, movies and songs from the new language. Instead of watching an English film at night, switch to a movie from your target country. This technique works great for picking up new words and slang that people actually use in daily life. In addition, it will help you to learn more about the culture that shares the language.

Make Mistakes

No one is perfect, and spoken language rarely follows grammar rules correctly. When you start learning a new language, forget about trying to speak it perfectly. If you wait until your grammar is perfect, you may never speak the language. Be prepared to make mistakes and start speaking. Successful language learners are prepared to get messy and make mistakes because that is the way you learn best. You will never forget the word for “milk” in another language if you accidentally use the word for “gas.” Every mistake is another opportunity to learn.

Intellectual Bilingual-Communication In “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, he thinks streets smarts should be considered an intellectual attribute. Also, colleges and universities tend to pay close attention to all the information written in books and do not allow their students to develop those skills that can help them succeed in the future. Graff’s point is that college and school should consider students attributes and talents and not only to see all students’ interests through “academic eyes” such as books and old history. In addition, expressing his appreciation for street smarts, Graff argues that “schools and colleges are missing an opportunity when they do not encourage students to take their nonacademic interests as objects…

Learner’s first language can cause a barrier to learn a new language, however, study the structural analysis of the two languages (first and second language) could predict the difficult areas that could encounter by learners. This is what it is known as the strong version of “Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis” which is the dominate approach to second language acquisition. Analyzing learners’ errors contributes to understand the weak side of learners and work to improve it, but it is important to distinguish between errors and mistakes. Errors can not be self corrected and the learner has no idea about the rules, and they are a result of the learner’s lack of knowledge about the proper language. However, mistakes are those errors that are made by a mistake or “a random guess”, and the learner knows the rules, but he/she fails to apply them in reality.…
