The short story, “The Landlady”, by Roald Dahl, is a very scary tale. It uses events with a certain theme in mind which is things are not always as they seem. In the story, Billy thinks the Landlady as a nice friendly old lady with “a round pink face and very gentle blue eyes,” but he soon finds out that she is not at all that nice. The Landlady only shows Billy what she wants him to see, and hides her true personality, a psychopath lady with an “unusual” hobby.
A short recap of the story shows this theme. Billy Weaver arrives at Bath at nine o’clock in the evening and needs a place to stay at. As he walks in the cold windy night to find a hotel, he sees the landlady’s house. Billy takes a peep at the house and deems it to be “a pretty decent house to stay in.” He notices peculiar thing about the “Bed and Breakfast” sign by the window. It seems to talk to him and coerce him to stay. Tired of the long journey, Billy ignores his first instinct and decides to stay in the Landlady’s house.

All the facts give an impression that the Landlady might have killed and stuffed her guests, and planned to add Billy to her stuffed collection. The Landlady might have lost her teenage son and fallen into depression so deep that she lost her mind. She is so lonely that she cannot even tolerate the loss of her pets, so she stuffed them.
