Welcome to the Land of Ogres
It was the moment my world stopped. The moment the birds flew away for safety and little kids playing so noisily outside ran home to their beloved mothers. I can remember it clearly. “James, Yvonne. The ones I no longer needed in an old ruined plastic bag, it was an upsetting time knowing things I once loved were to be binned. It was a bit like moving. People I liked and places I always visited were going to be gone. In the afternoon the sun was scorching hot. I wanted to go out and play with my friends, but instead I had to help my mum pack the bags for my dad and brother, who were to leave the next

I was in the garden again. The damp soil running through my fingers. The water soaking through the knees of my jeans. Growing up was somewhat tough for me, I have three older brothers wich means that along with the fact that I am the youngest of four, I am also the only girl. This may not seem like much, but the truth is that it has affected my life more than most people would expect. My brothers were known for being a bit rebellious, they were the type of boys that no teacher likes to have in their class and that one doesn’t dream about having next door. When I first started school it wasn’t that hard because none of them were in school with me, they were already in a different one…

I would give anything to see her, to hear her voice just one last time, to tell her I loved her and that I was sorry for leaving. I felt so brave when I left New Zealand, a soldier fighting for his country, for the greater good, but now I felt like a coward. I was scared all the time, I had nightmares whenever I slept, waking up just as a bullet hit me, tearing through my skin like it was made of paper. The Last Day Sweat was gleaming off my face as I finished lifting our couch into my mother’s van. It was a familiar action, we has always been moving around. We had held many houses for rent, each for one year at a time. We never stayed anywhere for long, presumably because nobody liked renting to single mothers with five kids. We were always drifters, seeking houses for rent and never having a permanent situation.…
