Poem Analysis: If You Can Achieve It

If You Believe It, You Can Achieve It Having confidence in yourself can lead to a positive and successful future. Almost all people, if not everyone, want to grow up to become a successful person, being able to support themselves and their families all while being a role model to others in society. In Nas’ “I Can,” he spreads the meaningful idea that his success came from believing in himself and not letting others pull him down from achieving the status that he has reached today. By singing this anthem, he tries to influence the younger generation into being themselves and reaching their life goals. Nas is a rapper who grew up in the early streets of New York where crime and gang related activity was common. Being able to escape the evils of his childhood and following his dreams, he was able to spread inspiration onto others, especially to the younger generation who may have not believed in themselves. Being a celebrity himself, Nas wants us to reach the same level or even greater success that he has seen in his life. He spreads his beliefs in the form of a song, which does have an influence onto listeners who still haven’t reached the level of success that they desire. He incorporates his ideas with problems of the past and does understand the struggles we face today, trying to give us the motivation that we need. We all live different lives with many similar struggles and the way we face them can be based off of our desire to be the best person that we hope to be in the future. Sometimes life does get tough and the odds are against us, but we have to stand up for ourselves and say “I Can” overcome these obstacles in the middle of our journey towards success and becoming who we truly want to
