The Lamb's Supper By Dr. Scott Hahn

As Catholics, Mass is the source and most important sacrament of our faith. Pope Francis stated back in 2014 that “every authentic journey of faith, communion and witness springs from this sacrament of love”. Claiming that the Mass is “so boring” or that “I just don’t get anything out of Mass” indicates the pure ignorance of that person. Dr. Scott Hahn’s book The Lamb’s Supper manifests that the Mass is truly heaven on earth by recognizing that to comprehend Mass we must know more. Dr. Scott Hahn breaks this down to the very basics of earthly Mass by relating it back to the Book of Revelation- something that I personally was unaware of before reading The Lamb’s Supper.
The first part of Dr. Hahn’s 3 part book focuses on the gift of the Mass

With this being said, the liturgy is something worth exploring; something worth knowing the true meaning and plan for our salvation. Hahn then proceeds to make an “outlandish” claim; “I propose that the key to understanding the Mass is the biblical Book of Revelation- and, further, the Mass is the only way a Christian can truly make sense of the Book of Revelation” (4). For the average person, like myself, I perceived that the frightening imagery described in the Book of Revelation, directly contradicts the way we are taught to view Mass (peaceful, glorious, etc). Hahn recalls his experience at Mass as perplexing. He states that during the consecration of the eucharist, when the congregation recited “Lamb of God”, that he was transported to the Book of Revelation where “Jesus is called the Lamb no less than 28 times in 22 chapters” (9) . Although this conclusion seems radical and pristine, it is actually was originally discovered by the Fathers of the Church; but more recently brought to the general public's attention through the Second Vatican Council (10). Hahn then quotes the Council and how what is being said could be

Recently, if not in the last twenty years, several evangelical Christians have begun to convert to a more traditional aspect of Christianity, few have seemed to notice the thread connecting all these conversions to be a need for deeper meaning in worship. Thomas Howard's book Evangelical Is Not Enough: Worship of God in Liturgy and Sacrament speaks to those longing as well as how to satisfy them through the liturgy. Tom Howard's whole aim is to direct the reader to understand that every church needs to identify its roots and appreciate the two-thousand year old history behind communion. Furthermore he does an excellent job in breathing life into doctrines and practices of both the evangelical and catholic world, that many of us lose the sight…

James H. Sweet works as a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin. Sweet’s book “Domingos Alvares, African Healing, and the Intellectual History of the Atlantic World” was published in 2011 by The University of North Carolina Press. Sweet’s inspiration originates from the belief that we are connected to our precursors and kinfolk and we too effortlessly lose consciousness of this in our day by day lives. Sweet argues that Domingos’ Spiritual, social, and political awareness originated from the struggle with the realm of Dahomey. Domingos became motivated to utilize his African past in a chronic endeavor for freedom due to the effects of Dahomey clashes that reverberated extensively over the Atlantic world.…

As a kid, I loved to eat at fast food places; my favorite places were McDonald's, Wendy’s, Burger King. The Fast Food marketing strategies such as toys in happy meals and McDonald’s playhouses made children like me want their food. They targeted children for obvious reasons, if a child begs their parents to buy McDonald’s they would buy it, and most likely the parents would buy something too. You cannot go one mile without finding a fast food restaurant nearby or an Ad for a Fast Food restaurant. Making it inevitable to avoid fast food.…

At age 11 I sit there in the living room in front of my television, listening to the popping of kernels as I anxiously snuggle up into my blanket, with my family, awaiting to watch our weekly Tuesday night show, “The Biggest Loser”. That show is how my love for health and wanting to study it started, therefore the article that most connected with me was “My Soul to Keep, My Weight to Lose” by Alice Randall. This story stood out to me because Randall does a good job capturing the many aspects that contribute to your weight journey. In this story, Randall gives the audience an insight on how losing weight is complicated yet rewarding.…

More than 2 in 3 adults and about one-third of children are considered to be overweight or obese. In his article “What You Eat Is Your Business,” Radley Balko claims the idea that we should take responsibility of what we eat instead of blaming the government for it. Balko argues that the way the government is spending a lot of money for anti obesity measure isn’t the right approach to prevent obesity. In contrast, in David Zinczenko’s article “Don’t Blame The Eater,” he insists how the fast food industries are to be blamed for the problem of obesity in America. He explains how the rate of diabetes in children has dramatically increased because of the negative effects of the fast food restaurants.…

As main stream denominations continue to shrink and modern day evangelicalism has morphed into something more politically and conservatively centered, I found “Rescuing Jesus; How People of Color, Women and Queer Christians are Reclaiming Evangelism”, by Deborah Jian Lee, enlightening, profound and hopeful as it centers on new, out of the box ways in which people generally pushed into the margins, are redefining their evangelical Christianity. “Evangelicalism is anything but a monolith; it is a vastly diverse landscape”. Meaning, not all evangelicals are the same and perhaps what we think of them or how we envision them is way off the mark.…

In his work Of Water and the Spirit, Fr. Alexander Schmemann provides multiple definitions of what liturgical theology is. His preferred definition presented at the beginning of his book is similar to the definition we encountered earlier on in this course. He says, “the goal of liturgical theology… is to overcome the fateful divorce between theology, liturgy and piety.” (12) Liturgical theology can only come as a revelation as one liturgically experiences the life of the Church.…

In October 2010, James Sanborn published “Weight Loss at Any Cost” for Marine Corps Times. James Sanborn wrote the article because Marines are hesitant of violating the authoritarian weight policy, appearance standards, and do not want to have to be put in the program called body composition platoon (BCP). He wrote the article to give us the truth behind what Marines actually do in order to lose weight such as starving themselves, taking laxatives and undergoing liposuction surgery even though none of that is necessary. The author wrote this article to inform the Marines that they do not have to take extreme measures in order to lose weight, and not all of the Marines are made the same; some will be bigger than others. Weight loss at any cost…

The crux of Calvin’s “Reply to Sadoleto” focuses on the theological criticisms of Roman Catholicism and the formation of Reformation theology. Calvin argues that the Roman Catholic Church first and foremost silenced the Gospel, which led to the perversion of the four things on which the safety of the church is founded, which are doctrine, discipline, the sacraments, and ceremonies (9). In order to purify these vital elements of the church, the Catholic Church needs to change its perspective on the understanding of true faith, the true church, and the authority of the universal church. Calvin believes that having the right understanding of faith is an integral part of Christian faith and a cornerstone of the church.…

Elizabeth Gilbert, famed author of Eat, Pray, Love, once wrote, “You spend a lot of your life having people tell you to follow your passion… passion is hot, it burns. Every day, you can’t access that… instead, follow your curiosity.” After graduating from Terra Nova High School in 2002 I decided to leave my home in the San Francisco Bay Area and move to Las Vegas to pursue better economic opportunities. For the past 13 years I’ve had the opportunity to closely interact with the diverse population constantly coming in and out of the city through my full time job at the Wynn Resort. It was through these frequent daily interactions that I became interested in human behavior and decided to follow my curiosity by enrolling at College of Southern…

In David Zinczenko’s article “Don’t Blame the Eater”, published in the New York Times on November 23, 2002, Zinczenko blames the fast-food industry for causing obesity to increase, by failing to provide calorie information so people can make informed choices and the lack of alternatives for children while their parents are working long hours. Zinczenko argues that with the amount of fast food restaurants that are available to children and the affordable prices, there’s no alternatives other than fast food. His point is that with the amount of fast food restaurants in the country, children fall into the trap easily and end up buying fast food. When he was very young, his mom worked long hours to pay monthly bills. The only choices that he had…
