The Lakers Case Study

During the Celtics consecutive championship wins they’ve faced many teams throughout each season but one team would give them the most trouble during this run and they were known as the Los Angeles Lakers (May 15). The Lakers were centered around Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. With Baylor’s and West’s help the Lakers would go to the Finals six time during the Celtics dynasty but couldn’t win a championship.The Lakers were a great team but were missing pieces needed to win a championship which their front office failed to give them. In 1978 a struggling Celtics were coming off a thirty two wins and fifty losses record. Auerbach who was now the general manager of the team wanted to bring in Larry Bird (Sportsecyclopedia). The struggling Celtics turned into an outstanding team and became title contenders once again. When the 1978 season was over Larry Bird he was awarded the Rookie of the Year award and was named an all star during the season. The team's successes did not fully transfer into playoff as they were eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers before reaching the Finals. The front office would soon come to the rescue again to figure out what they needed for the team to regain their former glory. During the offseason the Celtics would pick up two future Hall of Famers in Kevin McHale and Robert Parish. With Bird’s leadership and the Celtics upgrade roster the team would once again make the playoffs and would play the Philadelphia 76ers again in the Conference Finals where they would be down three and one in the series. The Celtics would eventually come back winning the next three games to advance into championship game against the Houston Rockets where Bird would win his first championship but he did not win Finals MVP that accolade would be given to his teammate Cedric Maxwell. The Celtics were having a championship drought and were looking to win another one. Upon Doc’s arrival the Celtics record improved from last season. They finished first in their division and made the playoffs where they would play the Indiana Pacers in the first round. The Celtics would be eliminated falling in seven games. Improvements were again needed in the team and it would take a couple of years for them to come. Between 2006 and 2008 the Celtics brought in different players for Doc to coach. These players being two future Hall of Famers in Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. They also brought in rookie point guard Rajon Rondo who was a gifted passer but a terrible shooter. The acquisition of these players turned the team around. In the 2007 and 2008 NBA season the Celtics achieved a sixty six win and sixteen loss record which was more than enough for them to make it into the playoffs. Kevin Garnett received NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and Danny Ainge also received an award as the NBA Executive of the Year for executing the most dramatic NBA turnaround in league history. In the playoffs the Celtics met the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Detroit Pistons beating each team to make it to the championship game where they would play the Los Angeles Lakers for their eleventh meeting in a playoff game.
