The Lake: A Narrative Fiction

The lake is a long way from here. The walk through the forest is a tiring one, I can feel drops of rain fall down my face as I stumble across the bridge into the forest. My heavy backpack starts to weigh me down. I turn behind me to make sure Kayla has not fallen behind, her face looks like she's ready to keel over and stop, but I have no time to let her. It is becoming dark, and every minute we waste is another minute we are away from home. I didn't mean to get us lost, I just wanted to explore the forest in this new town.
“Stefan, can we stop for a minute”, the struggle in her voice is immense.
“No Kay, we have to find our way home” I replied, trying to keep positive about our odd predicament.

Where are you?”, my panic escalates trying to find her. “Stefan! Help me!” she screams. I ran to the source of the sound, panting. I looked around confused as I could not see her anywhere in sight. “Stefan!”, I hear it again, but coming from below me. I looked down to see a massive hole in the floor. “what happened, are you okay?”. I look down at my scared little sister, wondering how we had managed to get into this mess. “Please help me,” she asks, trying to hold back her tears. “I'm coming for you Kay just hold on” I reply.

I rummage through my backpack looking for anything that might come in handy, I find nothing useful. The hole is about 3 metres deep underground. I run to a nearby tree and climb up to one of the branches, and swiftly plunge all my weight down on it. The crack of the branch thundered as I hit the ground. I pick up the slimy, slippery yet spiky branch and hope that it is long enough to reach Kayla at the bottom of the hole. “Climb up Kay, I'll hold it in place” I yell down.
“Okay I'm coming up” she replied, I can hear her struggle to lift herself up on the vertical branch. “You can do it, you're almost here. I say. I reach down to grab her hand. Nothing has ever felt more satisfying than to feel her grasp my hand, as I lift her up on the ground. Her valuable hug warms me in the rain and all of a sudden the whipping wind is no longer an issue. “You're safe now

We vaulted into what we called the “Rhino”, a quad equipped with a driver’s and passenger’s seat.…

When my father was young, his father had bought him and his siblings an orange plastic play boat to use at the family cottage. It had ore holders and a rope on the front in order for someone to drag it behind them in the shallow parts or to tie to the steps that lead into the cold waters of Lake St. Clair. My father loved that orange boat and he and his five siblings claimed that I was unsinkable. It lasted the wear and tear of burning hot summers with crazy thunderstorms and through freezing lake winters in the shed with whimsical blizzards. It has even lasted through me, my sisters, and my cousins.…

We weave our way through the woods trying to avoid puddles of unfrozen water, and logs that are in the way of the trails we have made. Finally, I spot the…
