Before you read on, think about what you would do if you had the choice of picking either being married to a beautiful maiden or being ravaged by an angry tiger. The number one reason for picking the beautiful maiden would be that you would still be alive, but if you picked the tiger you wouldn't have to put up with someone you dont love for the rest of your life. Now imagine you are discussing someone else's fate this would be a lot of pressure but you would probably pick the nice way out. There is a short story called “The lady or the tiger” which is all about a king whose daughter falls in love with a commoner. This semi barbaric king had a very interesting way of prosecuting the people who did bad things. He built an arena and at one end there were two identical doors, in one door was a tiger in the other was a beautiful maiden which you would marry on the spot. The princess's lover was put in this position one day when the father found out about the two lovers. The kingdom was searched and the most fiercest tiger was found, also the most beautiful of maidens was found, much to the princesses horror the maiden was someone who she absolutely …show more content…
If you told him to pick the door with the maiden in you would have to put up with the person you love marrying someone you hate. The story suggests that she picked the maiden when it says “never before had a subject dared to love the daughter of the king. In after years such things became commonplace enough”. This means that after the trial it was ok to love a king's daughter. The system was set up to say that if you got the maiden you were not guilty, the maiden was meant to be a reward but if you were already married you would have to kick out your wife and kids in place of your new wife. This wouldn’t affect the princess though because they weren't married but it would still be disappointing to see the love of your life building a life with someone
