In the story “The Lady or the Tiger?’’ there was a semibarbaric king, who had a public arena, in which, by exhibitions of manly and beastly valor the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured. If the king thought or knew that you had done something bad you would be sent to the arena. The arena had two doors, one door has a lady behind it and if you were to pick that door you would be instantly married and live happily ever after. However if you were to pick the other door that has a tiger behind it that would rip you apart and eat you. The king’s daughter, the princess, had a secret lover. The king didn’t think the man was good enough for his daughter because he wasn’t royalty, he sent the young, handsome man to the arena. This …show more content…
She thought he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all the kingdom, and she loved him with an ardor that had enough of barbarism in it to make it exceedingly warm and strong. The royal maiden couldn’t bare the thought of watching him die. The princess had done what no other person had done before. She had possessed herself of the secret of the doors. She knew in which of the two rooms, that lay behind those doors, stood the cage of the tiger, with its open front, and which waited the lady. The lover believed their souls were one. He trusted the princess with his life. He counted on her to know behind which door crouched the tiger and the lady. The princess wanted him to live. However, she couldn’t bare the thought of him being with someone else. The princess knew and hated the lady that her lover was to be paired with and would await for him behind the door. How often, in her waking hours and in her dreams, had she started in wild horror. She also cringed at the thought of him being with the dreamful lady. She often thought maybe if she was to give him the door of the tiger he would die quickly, so she wouldn’t have to see them together. She didn’t want to see him in heaven.
