The Importance Of Sleep Deprivation In America

From tired shift workers, to overburdened college students, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that a staggering thirty percent of American adults get less than six hours of sleep a day and the issue is so pervasive that they have deemed it a public health problem (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). In modern America, the corporate desire for maximum efficiency and profit, and the subsequent increased workload that follows, has catalyzed a lack of sleep for many Americans that has been the direct cause of a cornucopia of health problems. Steps should be taken to alleviate this deficiency of sleep up to and including reducing the work day from eight hours to six.

Sleep deprivation has an undeniable and egregious effect on both the physical and mental well being of the public on both individual and societal levels. And while it can be continually ignored and repressed with espresso shots until the coffee bean goes extinct, the healthy option would be to deal with the source of the problem. The government has acknowledged that the sleep situation in America is a health concern; as such, it is the patriotic obligation of Americans to do their part and take action. Admittedly, the six hour work day is not an entirely proven system as of yet; there have not been a great number of recorded trials and it could end up costing some money at first. However, America has always innovated and improved on the ideas of its friends to the East, and in the long run it could make companies more successful while preserving the wellness of its employees. It is shameful that the earnings of a corporation are held in higher regard than the health and welfare of its workers. Our response to this plight should be for the sake of the people, not the
