Pros And Cons Of Lack Of Grit

The lack of grit starts when we are first born and can lead all the way into the college years. Peter Gray, Ph.D., a research professor at Boston College and author, explains in an article on Psychology Today how less resilient students are shaping the landscape for the future of America. There is no clear-cut answer as to what is causing the problem; however, he states many reasons why this could be happening. A major complication is students are frightened of failure. If they fail, they are unable to cope with it. Not being able to cope with failure is attributable to growing up without grit. If you are not challenged in life, the absence of resilience can penetrate all throughout life. Thus leaving a sense of helplessness and abandonment …show more content…
The first benefit is that there is a strong bond between the child and the parent, almost like best friends. Also, the parents will always know where their child is and what he or she is doing. In the end, children are able to learn from their parents’ and not make the same mistakes that they make (Pros and Cons). The pros for helicopter parenting really do allow children to be close with their parents, which causes the bond to possibly be inseparable. Having your parent as a best friend, does not always allow enough social individuality and the lack of independence. I mean, do we want our parents to be our best friends? No, we want friends that are our age and know the struggle it is to be our age. Ideally, a society without the constant hovering of parents over their children can be obtained if parents allow their children …show more content…
Raising a child without grit will prolong a lifetime of no development and improper lifestyles. Not only do these children need resilience, they need independence. The key to a healthy lifestyle is displaying that independence can come naturally thus providing a self-promoting lifestyle. If parents of American students keep nurturing their children they same way they do today, the students of America will be lacking essential ingredients in the future. Those ingredients are independence, resilience, and the ability for proper lifestyles. If you are a parent right now, here is a helpful tip. Do not call your child’s college professor because the course is to hard for him; yes this has happened many times. Let him figure it out by himself. True resilience and independence will show if he can make it through

Teaching Children Resilience and Grit The article, “How Kids Learn Resilience” by Paul Tough, talks about how children are not being taught resilience and grit in their early years. It begins with talking about how stress is a major force that shapes the development of people in their early childhood. In addition, children who live in poverty, experience more toxic stress than other middle-class children. Then, once children are in the classroom, neurocognitive difficulties can turn into academic complications; which then can be perceived as attitude or motivational problems.…

Summary of “The Truth About Grit” In his article “The Truth About Grit”, Jonah Lehrer argues that “grit”, persevering through things and focusing intensely, is needed in equal or larger quantities than intelligence to be successful. He backs up this bold claim with multiple diverse sources. For example, he takes one of the oldest stories, the story of an apple falling on Newton’s head and exposes it stating that it took him multiple years of difficult work and telling of how he filled several notebooks with studies. This shows exactly how grit works, you need to persevere through things and come out victorious.…

It is true that not all humans have the same innate sense of grit like the anadromous salmon do, but that has not stopped some people from trying to integrate grit into the world. To produce better cadets for West Point, schools are starting to teach grit at a young age. An example of this is the marshmallow test done on preschoolers so measure their abilities in self-control. The children are promised two marshmallows if they can resist the temptation of eating one for a short amount of time. Their long-term goal, at least in the eyes of the children, is to get the two marshmallows but they have to refuse the impulse to eat the one right in front of them.…

While there are positives of helicopter parenting, there are many negatives that in my opinion, outweigh them in the long rung. Such as most children grow up not being independent or able to make their own decision, affects self-confidence in children, to the point where they are scared of having to face situations alone, and the children aren’t given the opportunity to learn from their own mistakes, and worst of all, most children end up living the dreams of their parents instead of their own and don’t get much of a fun childhood. Personally, I agree with Elizabeth Renzetti because it is how my brothers and I were raised as well as my parents. My parents grew up in St. John's and Mount Pearl, Newfoundland which are both equally small towns. There was never really any danger or a lot of people for that matter, so their parents just allowed them to go to the store, park, hang out with friends and more for pretty…

Everyone has a different perspective and interpretation about failure. Some people see failure as an unpleasant thing or a limitation of their capabilities, while others see failure as a learning opportunity or a guide on how to become better. For example, in the article, “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail,” the author, Angel B. Perez, implies that failure should not be feared because it is not as harmful as most people think it is.
