Unions were created for each induvial person to have a voice weather it is with benefits job security wages and so on. The origin of labor unions dates back to the eighteenth century in the industrial revolution in Europe. During this time, there was a huge surge of new workers into the workplace that needed someone to make sure everything was handled correctly. Unions were created so that workers can have representation in their work place. Unions fought for better wages, reasonable hours and safer working conditions. The labor movement led efforts to stop child labor, give health benefits and provide aid to workers who were injured or retired. Unions are beneficial to be a part of while working and benefits the employee after they have retired.
Wages are a huge part of many things unions negotiate. Working a job that is not a part of the union your wages can be set and you cannot negotiate anything because you do not have the right to voice your opinion on improving your wages in the work place. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2011 union members made a weekly average of $917 and nonunion workers made $717.Without unions wages are determined on how good of a worker you are or how much money the company brings in that year. Some benefits you have access to right away but some you must accumulate hours or even years. Workers compensation is a benefit to help employees that are injured and have massive medical expenses and lost their job. Union members or stewards are usually there helping the injured person file for workers’ compensation explaining how the process works and maybe even setting up the employee with an attorney for their workers’ compensation claims.
