Improved Essays
The battle of Pusan was one of the first engagements in the Korean War. It was also one of the most skillful defense operations made by a U.S. commander. Following the liberation of Seoul, South Korea in 1950, Americans were ecstatic about General Macarthur’s long fought and outstanding victory. American and South Korean forces continued to push well beyond the 38th Parallel—the delineation between North and South Korea—towards the Yalu River, the border between North Korea and Chinese Manchuria. In spite of the increasing likelihood of Chinese intervention, American and UN intelligence specialists ignored the possibility. Little did they know, that not only was it feasible, it was imminent. The Marines at the Chosin Reservoir prevailed despite being vastly outnumbered and outmaneuvered while underestimating their capabilities to relinquish security to Chinese and Korean forces by seizing an offensive initiative.…

Yet here, at Chipyong (ni signifies 'town in Korean) in February 1951, the U.s. Armed force's 23rd Infantry Regiment of the second Infantry Division battled the Red Chinese until the very end. Furthermore I, for one, will always remember it.…

At the end of World War II and finally liberated from nearly four decades of brutal occupation after Japanese defeat in 1945, the Korean peninsula found itself torn between two foreign ideologies. To the North of the 18th parallel was the Soviet Union leading the communist wing of the Korean resistance, while the United States fought for democracy from the South. On June 25th, 1950, the Soviet-backed communist North Korea pushed through the makeshift border and within weeks had invaded all but a small portion of the entire country. Consequently, the United States was left with the question of whether it should or even could respond to the aggressive tactics of its long standing rival.…

At this time the Korean War already saw the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, which pushed the North Korean army nearly out of the Korean Peninsula only to have the Chinese intervene with military force. The Chinese intervention pushed the United Nations (UN) back to the 38th parallel where both sides dug in strong and sturdy defensive positions. Colonel Westmoreland arrived after the Rakkasans had completed a successful operation to stamp out the prison rebellion at the United Nations Prisoner of War Camp No.1 on the island of Koje-do. Colonel Westmoreland immediately began to assess the Rakkasans’ ability as a unit and determine, “Although the unit had seen action earlier in the war, … the men had for long been in reserve in Japan and needed refresher training…”. Colonel Westmoreland initiated an aggressive training schedule to prepare the Rakkasans for future deployments against the North Korean Army and Chinese.…

By December 1950, General MacArthur, the man who thought of the Inchon invasion, started a campaign to end the war. On December 1 the 1st Marine Division began the movement that eventually took its rear guard inside the perimeter established by the 3rd Infantry Division near Hungnam. In the course of this escape, the division rendered three more Chinese divisions ineffective in addition to the four that had already been ruined at Yudam-ni and Hagaru-ri. During their 13 day walking battle back, 1st Marines Division suffered 718 dead, 192 missing and 3,508 wounded, plus their frostbitten casualties. The two time periods of service that I will be analyzing are World War II and the Korean War. World War II lasted from September 1, 1939-September 2, 1945. The Korean War lasted from June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953. WWII and The Korean War were both similar because the United States involved itself in both wars. Also, during both wars at some point the United States was fighting against communism.…

Based on what was learned about the Korean family from our class, the roles of the males in the family are very prevalent and the relationship between fathers and sons are covered in Richard Brandt’s book, An Affair With Korea. The ideas of the importance of continuing the family lineage were also reinforced in lecture when we discussed the role of the first son as well as posthumous adoption. With the roles of the daughter in the family being the ones who are to leave the family, the roles of the males are to stay within the family and carry on the lineage. However, in Gitzen’s thesis, he expounds on the relationship between mothers and sons in Korea, and how being gay affects such a relationship. While the father-son relationships were traditionally seen to be stiff and distant, the…

On June 25, 1950, North Korea, with 75000 soldiers, invaded South Korea. The newly formed United Nations voted unanimously that the invasion was a breach of peace and President Truman sends military force to aid South Korea on June 27. By early October of that year, the United Nations had beaten back the North Korean Army and had military forces which occupied most of North Korea including its border with China. This created panic in China because they themselves had recently become a communist state under the rule of Mao Zedong. The Korean war was largely marketed in the United States of America as battle in the war on communism.…
