Women are portrayed as religious figures throughout the story. They are often in the church or associating with the church. One example of this would be Jocelyn. All women were considered to be of less skill and ability compared to men. A prime example of this would be Williams personal Blacksmith. She was made to look like she wasn't good at her job. All the male blacksmiths sent William to her when he didn't have any money. She was also located away from all the other blacksmiths because she was a women. They didn't want to be associated with her because of this. This implied that her work was the only work bad enough to get for free. She then turned out to make William some of the best armor that he had ever wore. Another example of women being lesser than men would be that no women were allowed to compete in any of the competitions. Only the men who were considered worthy could compete because they only believed that they could compete. This portrayal is very far from today's perception. Women still aren't treated as equals but society has made leaps and bounds compared to this time.
Women are portrayed many different ways throughout the Knight's tale. None of these portrayals view women as equal to men. Some of the perceptions put women above men such as considering them as trophies or holy figures. Other perceptions put women far below the men such as Williams blacksmith. All of these perceptions, good or bad, can teach us something about women's roles in old society. It shows our society today has changed and that makes all these perceptions and roles very important today. It shows how far society has grown compared to many centuries
