The Kite Runner: Textual Analysis

Improved Essays
While reading The Kite Runner, I have had a few reactions to the text. One of my reactions is being shocked about the rape of Hassan in chapter 6. After Hassan retrieved the flag he was soon cornered by Assef and his two other bully friends. They told him to give the flag to them but he refused so they began to assault him then rape him. It was very disturbing to read.
A personal connection that I can make with some characters is how Amir is always trying to please his father. Throughout the story, Amir is always trying to do what his father wants him to do and tries to make himself look good in his father's eyes. I can relate to this because that is the case with me sometimes. Sometimes I focus too much on trying to please my parents.

When Amir blames Hassan for stealing the watch, Hassan admits to it even thought he didn't. He did this because he knows Amir watched the rape happen. The text never says how he found out. The cultural lens that I have decided to analyze is father and son relationships. In the Kite
Runner, Amir and Hassan both have different relationships with their fathers. I will be analyzing those relationships. First, the relationship between Baba and Amir before they move to America. Amir's parents were happily married. His mom was a joy in Baba's life. This all changed when she died giving birth to their son, Amir. "I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all I did kill his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn't I?" While giving birth to his child she died and that created a hole in Baba's life that immediately put pressure on Amir to fill. We can tell from the text that the death of Amir put a strain on the relationship between Baba and Amir. It also caused
Amir to try to please Baba to make up for the death of his mother. Also, Baba is always trying to teach Amir his wise ways. "Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin,

Amir feels as though, “ Baba hates [him] a little” because he hadn 't, “ turned out a little more like him” and even though Amir tries very hard to find common interest, for example, trying to play soccer, the similarities are not there (Hosseini 19). The lack of a common interest is one reason Amir and his father never bonded emotionally. Amir has also faced life long guilt after his mother dies while giving birth to him. This tragedy is haunting to Amir and causes him to believe that Baba resents him for the death of, “ his [father’s] beloved wife, his beautiful princess,” which makes Amir feel even more detached from his father Baba (Hosseini 19). Amir’s feelings of alienation are amplified because of Baba’s close relationship with Hassan.…

Throughout the Kite Runner, various themes are present, ranging from the symbolic message of kite running, to changing relationships, and even bloody violence. However, all of these themes are tied together in the single concept of circularity. Amir, Baba, Hassan, Ali, and Sohrab all have a role in the delicately crafted story. Hosseini depicts beautifully and painfully the vicious cycle of deception after deception, betrayal towards loved ones, and finally, redemption from past sins and freedmen from circularity. The rape of Hassan by Assef begins all the cycles.…

Amir did this cruel act and lied about not doing it because he felt that if Hassan left the house he would be able to bond more with his father. He also did this because he was jealous of Hassan and Baba’s relationship; they had more in common then Amir and Baba did. Last but not least, Amir also fakes his interest in sports, more specifically, soccer in order to gain his father’s approval because he felt that he had nothing in common with his…
