The protagonist is a young African boy. An obstacle he faces is a mean and cruel sheriff corrupted by power. The conflict is resolved, when the boy's father is released from prison. Another important character involved in the conflict was sonder because, when the sheriff took the boys dad sonder was shot and nearly killed. The setting is in a small town at the edge of a forest. An outside narrator talks about the boy's life. I consider the part when sonder gets shot the climax of the story.
