Amir has never had his father 's love or affection, so winning the kite competition and bringing home the last kite to be cut down would give him the love from his father, Baba, that he feels he desperately needs. After Amir catches up to Hassan and sees Hassan´s fight against Assef in the alleyway, Amir describes Hassan´s reaction to Assess preparation to rape him as ¨[Assef positioning] himself behind Hassan. Hassan [doesn 't] struggle. [Doesn´t] even whimper. He [moves] his head slightly and [Amir catches] a glimpse of [Hassan´s] face. [Sees] the ignition in it. It is a look [he has] seen before. It is the look of the lamb¨ (Hosseini 75-76). In this passage, Amir talks about when he watched Baba and Rahim Khan sacrifice a lamb, and Amir caught a glimpse of it´s face, a face of resignation about the fate it is about to face. Just as the way the lamb knew about his fate in the end, Hassan knew he was making a great sacrifice for Amir, and Amir knows what Hassan did for him. When Amir finally approaches Hassan after Hassan gets himself together. Amir is so focused on the kite, that he doesn 't even care about Hassan just having been raped. After Hassan gives Amir the kite, they have a silent moment where ¨[Hassan begins] to say something and his voice [cracks]. He [closes] his mouth, [opens] it, and [closes] it again. [Takes] a step back. [Wipes] his face. And that is as close as Hassan and [Amir] ever [come] to discussing what... happened in the alley. [Amir thinks Hassan] might burst into tears, but to [Amir´s] relief, he [doesn 't], and [Amir pretends he] hadn´t heard the crack in [Hassan´s] voice. Just like [Amir pretends he] hadn 't seen the dark stain in the seat of his pants. Or those tiny drops that fell from between his legs and stained the snow black¨ (78).
