He stood up to people that tried to tell him otherwise. He used his strength and cruelty as a way to make people compliant, " He led them toward us, like he had brought them here. Like he was the parent, and they his children" (95). Assef was insecure about who he was, so he needed to scare people into liking him. He then used their fear as a way to get them to do acts that they might now have normally done. although his friends did not want to rape Hassan, they went along with it because they were to scared to stand up to Assef. As time progressed Assef 's character only changed into a more sinister character, bullying people into liking him all the way to the end of the book.
Even though these two boys differed a lot in their character one of the similarities that they shared was that they both loved Soharb.
At first Amir was selfish in his wanting of Soharb. He did not care for the boy but rather saw him as a way to forgive himself for what he did to Hassan. Once Amir was able to get the relief he needed for all the grief he had been keeping, he was finally able to see the boy for what he truly was. He was a "way to be good again" (226).
