Oedipus came into power after solving a riddle that the Sphinx. The city of Thebes looked up to Oedipus, he was their mighty ruler, that saved them, however he finds out the city is cursed. Oedipus originally had left Corinth after being told, that he would be the cause of his father’s death, and would share the bed of his own mother. This news made Oedipus very happy, until the Corinthian man explained how Oedipus was not the blood son of his mother and father. Jocasta begged to hear know more, and she began to realize who Oedipus was (Oedipus Tyrannus 2.8).
The Herdsman comes and wants nothing to do with explaining all he saw, for he knows the truth and the pain of what happens when it comes out. Oedipus finally finds out that he was the baby that was giving away, that he was Laius and Jocasta’s son. Jocasta was very distraught and killed herself, and upon realization of what he did Oedipus gauges his eyes out, for he was against suicide. Oedipus punished himself, he felt he did not deserve to see, and since the citizens or Creon would not kill him, he punished himself for his actions (Oedipus Tyrannus 2.10).
Oedipus Tyrannus was a tragic hero. It was Oedipus fate all that had happened to him, but he did as he set out and found the killer, even though many people tried to stop him. Oedipus did not set out to kill Laius, but he still killed a man who ended up being Laius. Oedipus accepted what he did wrong, and that to can be considered heroic in its own
